Red - I agree, China is a part of Ecuadorian fabric. Since 2006 they have been quietly buying Ecuador debt, even to this day. Ecuador is up to the hair line in debt to the chinese. In fact it is not a pretty picture. Most (97%) of all oil produced by Ecuador goes to paying off chinese debt! 75% of GDP is their debt level.
The chinese continue to lend ecuador more money even though their oil is running at an all time low both in output and cost.
Ecuador is desperate to replace this conundrum. So what better than to sell their remaining crown jewels - PM's.

This link makes for uncomfortable reading but it goes to show that the new leader (post the elections next Feb) needs to get mining up and running ASAP if they are to fulfil their international monetary obligations or risk becoming a pariah.

This latest Chinese purchase - is just another way of cementing their ability to milk Ecuador for all they have got. PM's are the new oil and china wants its money back!
