One of the reason for me moving my dividend income away from individual shares and into dividend paying investment trusts. I own 3, HHI, HFEL and MRCH. No cuts to dividends throughout this turbulent period and diversification away from individual stocks.

Catlin1- interesting comments regarding your overall return over a 20 year period. I, too, am a long term investor. I came to the conclusion a number of years ago that the best way to make money was to stop trying to! Mostly moved away from individual shares. Very rarely sell. Invest every month, without fail, in a global equity fund ie Fundsmith Equity / Vanguard Globally All Cap Index etc. That's my view on investing. Good luck.

I'm sorry, but using CFDs are nothing like buying a run down house and adding value to it.

Just look at the share price performance in the 2 to 3 years prior to Covid before you heap too much praise onto the management team!

How about a 40% decline in the share price and a 50% cut to the dividend over the last 15 or so months. There's 2 elements to my holding I don't like!!

SmithyS2019 - I'm fully invested so very rarely have funds available to take advantage of market turmoil. On that basis simply sitting tight over the long term has been my best option.

As a long term investor, who's not interested in trading, I've seen some pretty good returns to date.

As a long term investor I'm now down to my last 4 individual shares. BP is one with a breakeven price of around £3.60.

I started to migrate from single shares into investment funds and trusts a number of years ago. For me far, far better returns with much less risk.

I do smile when I read some of the posts on here regarding returns to date. I fear for some new to investing who think it's easy to make money buying individual shares. If you're not very, very careful one day you'll pick the wrong one at the wrong time!

I don't think it's got anything to do with your trading platform. HMRC set the rules and it's their rules your gain, or loss, will be measured against for cgt purposes

The cost of the shares you sell is based on your average cost price.

CSDI1962 - I'm down to my last 3 dividend paying individual shares. For income I now use (i) investment trusts paying a dividend / MRCH / HHI / HFEL, or (ii) investment funds for overall capital growth which I simply sell units on a quarterly basis to provide me with a 'pretend' dividend. This method has proven to be by far the best from an overall return point of view.

4 largest holdings are: Fundsmith Equity fund, Rathbone Global Opportunities, Legal & General International Index and LF Blue Whale Equity. Far less stressful, wider diversification (both company and geography) and better returns (to date anyway!) Good luck with your investing.

Yet another of my individual dividend paying shares cutting its payout! I don't know why I bother with individual shares for income. It's my own fault. I should have seen this coming. It's been unable to cover its annual dividends for years now. The writing's been on the wall for a long time.

Never mind I'll hold until ex-dividend date and make a decision after that. I can't see me holding onto this as there are plenty of other investments ie trusts and funds, that generate a better all round return for me than this has to date.

Make sure you use both of them every single year!

I'm confused. I see, on your latest post, you have this as a strong buy. Why is it a strong buy today around £2.98 yet yesterday it was a sell at £2.95?
