Not sure how the dividend yield will dictate the share price. For me they are separate entities.

Plenty of people talk about the past. A number of holders here are basing future share price potential on historical levels ie £5.00 / £5.50 etc

I fear oil stocks are being rerated and the above figures are pie in the sky. I hope I'm wrong as I've a decent holding here.

Stockready1 - he's simply buying it to short term trade. For a boring stock LGEN does move about a fair bit.

You'd be in a much better position today if you'd have bought LGEN at a similar discount as BP to their pre-pandemic levels. You bought BP at about a 50% discount to what it traded at before the downturn in Feb/Mar 2020. To date you've made 20% capital return and enjoy an annual dividend yield of around 4.8%. Had you bought LGEN at a similar 50% discount today you'd be sitting on an 80% capital return and enjoying a growing annual dividend of around 11.2%.

Well the share buy back programme has worked wonders! Done nothing but decline since it commenced.

Is it worth it for a 1.6% gain less stamp duty and trading costs?

When I decide to sell my BP holding I won't be buying another oil stock!

I'm not convinced with share buybacks. They'll increase earnings per share for, probably, the benefit of directors. If BP have spare cash why don't they put it to good use within the business to compound return on capital. Or haven't they any good projects / ideas / acquisitions in which to invest?

Oh, no you're not. It's part of the total return on your investment. Never forget that.

Compound - thanks for the response. My overall key measure is total return ie income received and capital growth. Providing this meets my desired target each year then I'm happy. I measure growth against the value of each holding at the previous year end.

My best overall returns have been from investment funds. I always invest in the accumulation version of the fund and simply draw down on capital to provide myself income when required.

Compound - "you'd be surprised how many people work out yield based on their purchase price" - that's because it's the correct way to do it!

So when will we see some growth from so called value stocks? Let's use BP as an example. I'm not talking about growth from here I'm talking about real growth that puts it well ahead of where it was say 3 years ago. It was £5.60 in May 2018. It's got to deliver 75% sp growth from here just to get back to where it was then.

As for tech having had their day. No chance! Microsoft, Adobe, Paypal, Facebook, Alphabet, Mastercard etc are far from having had their day!!

Well that's a very complicated way of saying the share price may go up or it may go down!!!!!

SmithyS2019 - I used to work for a company within the Spirent group. Back in 2000 (ish) they aligned themselves with the tech sector. Renamed from Bowthorpe to Spirent. All was going well until the dotcom bust. Share price went from something like £7 down to 4p!!!!!

If 20m shares have been bought by BP then it's about 0.1% of current share capital
