SmithyS2019 - I totally agree with your comments regarding trading. Unless you really know what you're doing, and even after 20+ years of investing I don't, then you're gambling not investing!

Once you accept that you really don't know what you're doing simply invest every month in a global equity fund. Every month without fail. Month in month out. Year in year out. Never sell. Never panic. Over the long term you'll build up a substantial amount of money. Simples!

All this noise. All this guesswork. If you think this is a good long-term investment simply buy the shares and come back in 12 months time. I often wonder what return all this buying, selling and speculation actually results in.

FTSE is too dependent on old economy stocks and lacks any sizeable leaders in new type businesses. In addition there is a great big world out there readily accessible to long-term investors. The UK is a relatively small player in the global economy and (I think) only represents about 3% of total global GDP.

I diversified globally in my investing many years ago.

Plus cgt allowance for this tax year is £12,300.

Not sure where you get 4.1p from. The December dividend was 3.9169p. This was based on a 5.25 cents dividend per share at a £v$ exchange rate of $1.34036.

Assuming the 5.25 cents ps is maintained, the sterling equivalent will not be known until around the 2nd week in March. However, the £ has strengthened slightly against the $ so the sterling payment will likely decrease.

Based on todays exchange rate it would be 3.8321p

Hi CSDI1962 - only you can answer your question. I also hold a number of dividend paying trusts / shares along with some global investment funds. I hold the accumulation version in each case ie income reinvested.

My global funds have far outperformed all my dividend paying holdings for many years. Some of my best performing funds are listed below:

Even my holding in Legal & General International Index, which is a global tracker fund, outperforms my dividend paying holdings. Good luck!

I've been waiting for the so called shift from growth to value stocks for years. No sign of it happening any time soon as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't say a 5% downturn for Qualcomm was 'tanking' It's still up over 75% over the last 12 months. Now a 41% share price decline over 12 months would be something to worry about!

"where else can you achieve a 30 per cent gain in less than a year" . . . how about Baillie Gifford International Fund +36%, AXA Global Tech Fund +43% or Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust +122%. All figures are growth achieved over the previous 12 months!

There is no comparison between the Nasdaq constituents today and 20 years ago.

Chazzz1122 - If your post is for real then my advice would be you shouldn't be investing in shares. Especially not cyclical holdings.

I'm a long term holder here with a breakeven price of £3.56 factoring in dividends received to date. Am I confident that at some point I'll break even? Yes. Do I know when? No, I've no idea. Do I know what the share price will be this time next week / month? No. Do I care? Not really!

You need to decide if you are a trader or an investor. There's a big difference!

14 minutes later they’ve started as per your post at 20.39 – “Hedgefunds and Asset managers starting to jump on oil companies again ... buy signals are stronger and stronger ..”

So, which fund managers and hedge funds have started to jump on oil companies? Which tech stocks have they started to switch out of? And, finally what are the buy signals that are ‘stronger and stronger?

Maybe it is a simplistic view. Taking your dates ie 30.01.20 to 18.03.20 Shell fell 55% and BP 50%. Not a great deal of difference. Or maybe I'm missing something.

I think you're getting a bit too involved in short-term numbers. Keeping it simple BP is down 40% over a 12 month period and RDSB has declined 38%. Over 3 years it's a 44.3% decline for BP and 44.4% for Shell. Nothing in it.

And how would the platform know how much dividend to pay you as of today?

No. Not necessarily. Obviously if a company trades at a loss over the long-term then continuing to pay a dividend makes no sense at all. However, although BP's results show a 90% decline over the corresponding quarter in 2019 they have at least reported a small profit for the quarter of £75m. This compares to a loss of £5bn in the previous quarter. They continue to cut costs and forecast a continuing increase in sales for oil driven by a higher demand from Asia. On that basis I see no reason for a further cut to the dividend.
