It's entirely up to individuals when they sell. However, what I do find strange is people selling now who a short time ago were claiming to be in this for the long term. What has changed?

I am pretty critical of BP's overall return to shareholders over recent times but I've stated many times on this board that I'm prepared to hold until at least q2 2022 in order to give it time to either recover or demonstrate to me that the sp isn't going to recover.

I know I can't time the market so I don't bother trying. It's unfortunate that some people don't know they can't time the market! I've been an investor for decades and over the years I found that the harder I try and make money the less I make. Simply buying and holding has been by far the best strategy for me over the years and I'm sticking to that even though this is probably one of my worst investments currently! I'm currently giving it time!!

Gary59 - thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. One other investment I would highlight is Smithson Investment Trust. I invested at inception and it's pretty much doubled in value over 3 years. That's what I consider to be a good investment.

Gary59 - totally agree with your comments on funds. Most of mine are boringly reliable and have produced returns well in excess of my dividend paying holdings.

My 3 largest managed funds are Fundsmith equity, LF Blue Whale Capital and Rathbone Globall opps. I only hold the accumulation version and take cash from capital as required. My investment with Fundsmith is direct with them and they offer an automated drawdown facility which I use so it's just like receiving a quarterly dividend.

I've also had excellent returns from my investment in L&G Global Technology Index, which a simply a low cost tracker.

I'd be interested in what you consider to be your best funds.

This isn't a short term investment for me. My first purchase was back in Feb 2017. So, unfortunately I'm currently sitting on a 29% capital loss, although this is offset by a 23% return from dividends.

I make no apologies for posting facts. And the fact is that irrespective of your buy price your holding here has returned absolutely nothing for you over the last 3 months. In fact the share price was hire at one point in March than it is today.

Why have I chosen to focus on the last 3 months? Well simply because the thread refers to that time period and everything that's posted here for this period is positive and apparently BP are 'printing' cash! If that's the case then it isn't coming through in the share price! I'll continue to monitor my investments and report facts.

PeterH1 - I don't consider it as shortsightedness. I view it as analysing my investment. This current quarter has seen an increase in oil prices, a continuing increase in volume demand and a spike in wholesale gas prices. All positive aspects for BP's business. Yet stagnation remains.

You stated in one of your previous posts that you expect a 'legup in the share price', so come on be more specific. To what and by when?

All this excitement over performance during 3rd quarter. To date in this quarter the total return for shareholders has been 0.00%!!!!!!!

licker - I can only reference historical points as reference as none of us can predict the future. I thought a 5 year period was a reasonable time period to judge performance. Maybe I'm wrong.

Perhaps you could enlighten me as to when this rotation will happen? I can't see a transfer of investment from Microsoft, Paypal, Adobe, Visa, Facebook, Alphabet etc etc etc to BP anytime soon. Maybe you know more than I do.

What reset? The Nasdaq is down 2.25% today. I wouldn't call that a reset. And as for stupidly valued tech stocks compared to the safety of high yielding value stocks . . . well, I'm just glad that I take a more balanced view to my portfolio. My Legal & General Global Technology Index fund has returned me +242% over the last 5 years . . . my safe high yielding value stock ie BP has returned -1% over the same period!

2 of my largest holdings are as follows:

Fundsith equity fund (acc) - average growth of 18% per annum (compound) since launch in 2010

Smithson inv trust - pretty much doubled in value since launch 3 years ago

Bananaman2 - I have a balance within my portfolio split between dividend paying holdings and non dividend paying holdings.

I'm currently moving away from individual dividend paying shares into dividend paying trusts. Main trust holdings are HHI, Hfel and Mrch although I've recently taken a position in EAT.

I mainly use funds to target capital growth. Main managed funds are Fundsmith Equity, LF Blue Whale Capital and Rathbone Global Opportunities. Tracker funds are L&G International Index and L&G Global Technology.

The only thing I might add is that my funds have outperformed my dividend paying holdings by a long way. I sometimes ask myself why I continue to bother investing for income!

Saitoman - irrespective of your purchase price the value of your capital today will return the same dividend yield as anybody else who is invested over the next 12 months. This is how I measure all my investments.

Saitoman - the yield you get is the current annual dividend / the value (not cost) of your share x 100

Bigbadbaz - only from the point of view that I believe it's a mistake to think yield is 7.7% or, in your case (and mine) 3.2%. For me a more realistic measure is against the current value of your capital not what it once was.

Thomo1968 - "the yield for me is 7.7% . . ."

Be careful and don't fall into that trap. Your yield is 5.1%. If the share price remains static from today for the next 12 months you would see a return of 5.1% on the value of your investment today.

On the basis that I know I can't time the market I pretty much remain fully invested all the time. My only strategy to help protect my capital is to be well diversified across geographies and sectors via managed and tracker funds. Single shares form a relatively small part of my portfolio.
