Former Irish president Mary Robinson and Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus lead objections ahead of New York summit.

Nearly 80 Nobel prizewinners and former world leaders have hit out at the removal of a specific mention of fossil fuels from the draft of a UN climate pact at the centre of a summit in New York next month.

Yunus to meet Biden tomorrow. Should be interesting to hear what gets discussed.

This writer is in no doubt that the US are looking to get a foothold in Bangladesh for military reasons and that climate change and clean energy will be high on the agenda.

Just like Russia/Ukraine they'll use Bangladesh to push back against China and establish a foothold in the area. Especially with Taiwan becoming a hot potato. Money will be no object. Huge aid packages will be announced.

The US want Bangladesh for their own global political aims. Lots of aid and a big push of their green agenda.

I still have a holding here, if the BNP get in then I think the project will get approval. I just don't see Yunus turning up at Cop28, getting the red carpet treatment, voicing his anger at fossil fuels and then approving an OPM in Bangladesh. Also as hes unelected he has no legitimate authority and a decision like that would meet massive opposition from the students whipped up by the likes of Anu. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Even if Yunus wanted to throw his own personal beliefs out of the window for the benefit of Bangladesh will he risk upsetting the powerful youth movement that ousted Hasina and put him in charge?

Yunus took over as interim leader 8 Aug 24. Here 13 Aug 24, in his capacity as Chief Advisor of Bangladesh he was speaking out against fossil fuels.

Despite all the ramping on here lately Yunus has still not called an election and without an election the project progress is doubtful. If the BNP win the election they previously approved the mine so it would be very good for GCM. But Yunus has led the fight against coal use globally. He's not going to change his beliefs now.

'it’s as positive as it’s been in years' - Bangladesh now has a leader who has protested against coal all his life. And he's backed by the US who are pushing their global green agenda. Yunus will not be holding elections any time soon.
