RE: Where have all the proper investors gone28 Mar 2021 22:10
I occasionally sell losses. I got out of Genedrive a few days ago because I lost faith in the company. I'd be stupid to sell any DDDD at a loss as I've confidence in the company. But it's nice to have the option to redistribute funds without selling losses.
That said, I think my portfolio has too many companies on it. I need to trim some of the smaller investments and put the funds into ones I'm more interested in. I want to invest in SNG for example. In hindsight, I probably should have put some of the funds in DDDD into SNG but I was unsure back then whether I want to invest in them.
I don't agree with Warren Buffet's "don't invest in a company if you're not willing to hold for 10 years" quote. Generally I think of timescales over the next few years as I'll be wanting a bigger house around 2025. Happy to leave certain ones for longer if needs be. All depends on the company, not all my investments are in companies with high growth prospects like DDDD that might need years. Got a fair few "boring" stocks like BP and LLOY that I consider short term that I'm reasonably confident will bring returns over the next 6-12 months. Not sure I'd want to hold stocks like that for a decade.
