One other thing to think about for those with larger pots is the Financial Compensation Scheme in the unlikely event that your broker goes bust. The UK government will compensate up to £85k per provider so if you’ve got more than this with one broker it’s advantageous to split with another.

I’m not a financial adviser but thought the following might help for a rough guide of the pros and cons of each option.

ISA

Pros - all income and gains free from income tax and capital gains tax
Cons - only £20k can be deposited into account each tax year - 06/04 to 05/04

SIPP

Pros - tax relief available on all contributions. So if a 40% or 45% taxpayer this can be extremely lucrative. Also on earnings between £100k and £125k the marginal rate of tax is 60% due to loss of personal allowance - no bringer using contributions to bring taxable income down. At £50k you start losing your child benefit and completely gone at £60k. Also £100k plus you start losing entitlement to 30 hours free childcare. Pension contributions can bring your taxable earnings down so you can keep these entitlement if you are in the margins. Contributions are subject to annual allowances, and restrictions in the case of very high earners.

Cons - funds are locked in till age 55 and I think this might be moving to 57 - need to check. Withdrawals taxed as income at your normal rate. Also subject to pension lifetime allowance - around £1m.

Ordinary Trading Account

Pros - complete flexibility with regards to how much can be put in annually. Possible less hassle for folk are are not too fussed about tax issues or have relatively small holdings.

Cons - dividends over £2k annually are subject to income tax, capital gains over £12,300 subject to capital gains tax.

For a bit of fun I’ve actually bought some Robinhood shares this week. Just a small amount so I can take part in the excitement.

He’s got a point though. There seems to be a ‘Neil’ on every BB on LSE. A wise investor across many stocks but only posts negatively on the one board. They’ve always made money on said stock previously and are now dishing out their wisdom on the poor unsuspecting remaining investors.

What is it Warren Buffet said about markets being money moving to the patient from the impatient.

The psychology around IPOs ans stock solids is never rationale in my experience.

Yes the their will be more shares in issue but they’ll also be a whole market of demand. Is any fundamental value being created - not I’m the short term but this won’t matter.

Reminds me of when Apple and Tesla both split in the summer - shouldn’t have mattered a jot to shareholder value but they both flew up. Same when Tesla was confirmed as joining the S&P.

I would expect them to have pretty decent modelling where they can have a good educated guess at how many stop losses there might be at any given time and at what levels.I don’t think the brokers would give out this information to the MM’s as this would be a breach of their duty of care.

Yeah I’m spiked as well as got in at $62 but who knows where it will settle as fundamentals won’t matter one hit.

Gross margin was around 20-21% in 2020.
