Why hydrogen, and why now?

BMW’s battery-electric models have already made their mark, but Guldner insists hydrogen is more than just a niche interest – it’s complementary, crucial even, for specific user cases.

“Hydrogen vehicles combine the best of both worlds,” he explained. “They offer the electric driving experience – quiet, zero emissions, instant torque – but can be refuelled in three or four minutes, like a petrol car.”

Not everyone has easy access to electric charging, either at home or at work, and not everyone wants to pause journeys to recharge batteries, no matter how quick charging becomes. “Hydrogen neatly solves these problems”, Guldner noted.

It is also nice to see some Korean investment, recently Hanwha Asset Management increased their shares for another 267k (to 970k in total).

Hanwha is South Korea’s seventh-largest business group and they were named to TIME’s list of the TIME 100 Most Influential Companies list.

Hyundai’s new hydrogen car goes on sale in South Korea with 720 km range

Hyundai has officially begun sales of the second-generation NEXO in South Korea - its latest hydrogen fuel cell SUV - now updated with more power, longer range, and a sharper look inspired by last year’s Initium concept.

This is the first full model change for the NEXO since 2018. Following its production debut in April, the new version is now on sale with upgraded drivetrain components, faster acceleration, and a host of driver aids and convenience features.

More power, more range, five-minute refuelling

The drivetrain has been comprehensively upgraded, with the new NEXO getting a 94 kW fuel cell stack, 80 kW battery and 150 kW motor - up from 120 kW in the previous model.

Hydrogen storage rises to 6.69 kg, helping deliver a class-leading 720 km range (on 18-inch wheels, Korean test cycle), while 0-100 km/h drops to a brisk - for a family SUV - 7.8 seconds. Refuelling still takes around five minutes using standard 700-bar pumps.

Trim levels and pricing

For the first time, Hyundai is offering the NEXO in three trims: Exclusive, Exclusive Special, and Prestige.

Prices start from approx £41,350 / $56,226 in Korea, with national and local subsidies potentially bringing that down to an incredibly cheap £21,080 / $28,667. The final price depends on local authority support, which varies by region.

It could be @breakofdown since the exact MW capacity isn't specified for Irvine, it's only mentioned as being part of a larger development alongside the Whitelee project.

Kemsley: this 80 MW onsite plant is strategically positioned in the North of Kemsley (Kent). It plans to produce up to 32 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, primarily for an industrial player in the region

Wallsend: the 20 MW facility is located on the site of the historic Neptune Bank Power Station (Wallsend, North Tyneside). It plans to produce up to 8 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.

My guess is Lhyfe.

Both of Lhyfe’s UK projects are supported: Wallsend (20 MW) and Kemsley (80 MW)

Let's remember, POSEIDON is 20MW. How many, we don't know but both of them seems at least similar to Humber size if not more.

Selected for two UK projects

ITM Power is pleased to announce that a customer has selected us as the supplier for a large-scale green hydrogen project in the UK, which was successful in the government's Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2), alongside a separate, smaller project in the UK.

ITM will deploy POSEIDON, our core electrolysis process module, into both projects. POSEIDON offers unmatched efficiency, rapid response times, and an optimised footprint.

The two projects aim to supply local industries with green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions. Each project remains subject to a Final Investment Decision (FID), and our customer wishes to remain undisclosed until this point.

Dennis Schulz, CEO, said, "We are honoured to be chosen for yet another HAR2 project in the UK, just weeks after Uniper confirmed us for their 120MW Humber project. This supplier selection demonstrates two things: that the UK is starting to gain traction in green hydrogen, and that we are establishing early leadership in our home market."

Sad to say, nuclear is not carbon-free because these plants are constructed from cement, the production of which makes carbon dioxide. Happily, a tiny Sheffield-based business aims to cut emissions by heating cement kilns with “green hydrogen”, produced by passing electricity from wind farms through water.

ITM Power (ITM) has sold one of its electrolysers to a Spanish cement-maker. The chief executive Dennis Schulz said: “This will be ITM’s first deployment in the cement industry, which the International Energy Agency says accounts for 8 per cent of global carbon emissions.”

Coming down from the clouds of CO₂, I invested 2 per cent of my life savings in ITM at £1.24 in 2020, as reported here at that time. Then I took profits by selling at £5.39 and £4.46 in 2021 before topping up at 50p last month, as also reported here at those times. On Friday they traded at 74p. It’s a high-risk business but has been rewarding in the past and may be so again in future.

I feel these are the only days for shorters (i.e. a sudden drop in global markets due to news like today) to close their positions, not after RNSs.
