As part of the panel, I shared a simple reflection: weโve come a long way, starting to move from grey to green hydrogen in applications such as refineries and ammonia, and realising new use cases like grid balancing and replacing natural gas. But there are still obstacles to even faster industrial-scale offtake:
โข a mismatch between risk appetite and expected returns by developers, or oftentimes rather by their lenders,
โข macroeconomic headwinds from inflation and interest rates, and overall capital availability, and
โข slow government funding decisions that hold back projects.
At ITM Power, we created Hydropulse to tackle these obstacles โ offering hydrogen as a service, aligning accountability with capability, and taking capex constraints and technology risk off the table.
Looking ahead, the real synergies for societal and environmental gain lie in:
โข sector coupling, linking renewables with industrial demand,
โข shared infrastructure and standards, making hydrogen flow like natural gas across borders and sectors, and
โข skills and jobs, creating good employment in regions which are now rather making headlines for โdeindustrialisationโ.
As a new Board Member of Hydrogen Europe, Iโm committed to pushing for the infrastructure, skills, and standards that turn todayโs momentum into lasting societal and environmental gain.
