Designated market makers income is from providing the liquidity for the stock. They make their money from the spread and commission. They don't have anything to do with the short selling CFDs. Institutions happy to loan stock for leverage for shorting do so to protect their stock so they do not have to sell. Market Makers used to have the perk of being able to short stock(sell it although they do not own it, and have not even borrowed it from another broker) I am not sure that is the case now though. Anyone know an MM? Point is punters short an instrument as they believe they can make a few, or banks might political short a stock, or in the case of AQ they are relying on MW report.
