Don't Get Stung by Ryanair's Strict Rules7 Feb 2022 18:21
You can now only check in for free between two and 24 hours before departure. Checking in less than 24 hours before a return flight when you're stuck in a foreign city or hotel may be tricky.
Whatever you do, don't leave checking in until you arrive at the airport. You'll pay £55 per person, per flight if you fail to do it online in advance – that's £220 for a family of four if you get it wrong, more than the cost of some flights.
Also bear in mind if you check in online but don't print out your boarding pass or download it to your smartphone, you'll be stung with a £20 per person fee for it to be reissued when you get to the airport.
So, just be careful - what looks like a cheap flight could end up with lots of other added costs - this is where the RYA Ts & Cs can catch you out. The so-called "free" bag on Ryanair is smaller than other airlines - about the size of a laptop bag, the seats have to be pre-booked (at a cost) if you want to sit together and (as above) even just checking in for free can be a bit of a nightmare once you're abroad.
Many other airlines (Wizz, Jet2, Vueling, Easyjet) don't have these inconveniences so it may be worthwhile paying a little more up front rather than paying all these extras on top of the original headline price that Ryanair offered you.
