Your comment "I don't think it will be an A vs B type discussion" is an interest one when you consider just how nascent this whole issue is. I would like to try and second guess how this is all going to pan out. If you go back to the start of the 20th. century it looked like electric cars would supplant the horse. As we now know they weren't responsible for the end of the horse age. I think it's far too early to be able to say what's going to come out on top.

If nickel does get squeezed out of batteries for whatever reason there's alway the stainless sector to take up the slack right? The Chinese, as I'm sure you know however, have been particularly good at finding solutions to high prices. The old saying "the cure for high prices is high prices" is particularly true with the Chinese. The recent run up in the price of nickel resulted in an increase in the use of 304 and austenitic stainless steels. The former with reduced nickel the latter with no nickel at all. Nickel in stainless steel is an option.

It's interesting the speed with which LFP came to dominate the EV battery market in China. From virtually nothing to 60% in a few years if memory recalls correctly. As for sodium ion batteries given the fact that they dispense with the three most expensive elements that go to make up some of the other options; nickel, cobalt and lithium the incentives are there to iron out their shortcomings.

I'm not sure if we are going to have a VHS-vs-Betamax to DVD to streaming situation here or not but it does feel like it.

The industrial action at Inco back then and the prohibition on Norilsk Nickel now are analogous. I shouldn't think it would take years to feed through. It didn't back then and, if it were going to, I shouldn't think it would do so now.

I don't think anybody is questioning what A1 and A2 will produce. That wasn't the topic being discussed.

As a matter of interest what do you think will happen to the nickel currently going into EV batteries should a nickel free alternative start to dominate that space? In particular the nickel that has a negative AISC to produce?

By your reckoning, given everything going on in the world right now, nickel should roaring ahead. How much of a lag do you think the markets needs before a war starts to make a significant impact? The conflict in Ukraine is almost 2 years old now.

Not every solid state battery contains nickel. The solid in solid state refers to the lithium electrolyte so you can have LFP solid state or sodium ion solid state batteries neither of which require nickel.
