Coronavirus is still spreading; therefore, it is too early to discuss different success stories and to claim that any country could ultimately beat COVID-19. Furthermore, as the outbreak started at different points in time in different countries, with different populations, comparing them is very difficult.
Also, for better or for worse, there is always the party-political angle, as with the NHS failures being apportioned to political failures.
Removing such matters from outside of the control of political influence would be helpful, but this is never going to happen.
In some ways we are in the territory of the Aids Virus, people panicked by governmental messages of doom and gloom and nobody really understanding what to do to avoid contamination, especially in the early days.
We now have a much clearer picture on the mechanism behind the spread of the Aids virus, but it took many years to develop a medicine to arrest the symptoms.
Blaming a certain segment of the population for care-free sexual behaviour was only part of the answer.
Even today (as in the times of Aids) I hear of people refusing to take precautions, i.e. by wearing masks.
