Testing Difficulties In Tier 421 Dec 2020 07:57
Covid testing on brink of collapse in Tier 4 amid surge in demand
Nearly two million residents of Kent were unable to access tests on Sunday, while many Londoners were sent more than 20 miles.
No walk-in or drive-in tests in Kent were shown as available by 3pm on Sunday with residents asked to travel to London testing centres instead.
It comes after fears emerged that England’s testing infrastructure could be on the brink of collapse after not a single test was available in London just hours before the city was plunged into tougher restrictions on Saturday (December 19).
By midday on December 20, those living in Ashford were told they faced a six-hour wait to access one of under 150 tests at a facility 25 miles away.
Matt Han++k, the Health Secretary, last week said Kent had a “serious problem” caused by the new strain of the virus and stretched NHS resources.
Walk-in locations across the county were also out of stock within a five-mile radius as early as 12pm.
This will get worse as the demand for testing ramps up.
Everything is needed for the best tests to come to market.
