A classic de-ramping troll narrative, from start, "I've been in this for, blah, blah, blah years...", to finish, "Shaun Day, blah, blah, blah.."

I've said it before, many times over the past 6 months or so, but I'm frankly astonished at just how far behind the curve most financial advisors/analysts/journalists are about the gold price. They appear to have been pretty much oblivious to the facts, and only just catching on. IMHO, it's often because they just don't understand natural resources in general, but especially mining, and that tends to be most common with the younger ones, preferring the more 'hip' tech sector, on which they've concentrated, at their loss now, for years.

Anyway, it's good that they are now catching on, and will hopefully now push the gold price to even higher levels.

Gold’s biggest rally since the 1970s is being stoked by “gold-plated Fomo”, as investors fearful of missing out on returns and worried about inflation add the precious metal to their portfolios.

The bullion price has rocketed more than 50 per cent this year, hitting a record high of $3,940 a troy ounce on Monday, after US President Donald Trump’s trade war sparked a rush to haven assets and sent the dollar tumbling.

But even when tariff-induced volatility in financial markets receded over the summer, the gold price accelerated, with a near-12 per cent jump in September alone marking the biggest monthly gain since 2011. 

A key catalyst, say asset managers, has been a wider range of investors jumping on the bandwagon of soaring prices after years of record buying by central bank reserve managers.

“It’s gold-plated Fomo,” said Luca Paolini, chief strategist at Pictet Asset Management, referring to a “fear of missing out” that is also seen as fuelling huge gains in megacap technology stocks and other markets such as credit.

“Gold has become so big . . . that you cannot ignore it. There becomes a level when it becomes impossible not to own it.” ....

Too early on a Saturday morning!

“Garimpeiro” columnist Barry FitzGerald has covered the resources industry for 35 years. Now he’s sharing the benefits of his experience with Stockhead readers.

Is it asking too much for ASX gold equities to build on the already impressive gains they have made in 2025 in response to the gold price soaring to record levels?

It seems not. While gold stocks have performed strongly, with many reaching record levels, many continue to lag the performance of the yellow metal which is up 47% year-to-date.

Assuming the gold price holds together and then has a crack at breaching $US4000/oz, the lag effect will start to unwind in a hurry.

It is why ASX gold equities currently command the biggest implied share price upside as captured in the share price targets of the big name brokers.

That came through loud and clear in a 109-page commodities/equites tome penned by the metals & mining desk at Barrenjoey dated September 29....

...Barrenjoey’s share price optimism for the gold stocks – it has “overweight” recommendations on 11 of the 17 stocks in its coverage – is despite its assessment that not all of the gold price rise will reach the bottom lines of the gold producers.

“We think many gold miners will choose to reduce cut-off grades, which we expect will reduce production and lift unit costs,” Barrenjoey said.

“Therefore, for many of our gold equities, we have reduced our production forecasts and raised operating and capital costs.”

But gold earnings are nevertheless headed higher, with the ASX-listed US gold giant Newmont now having a profit potential in the next couple of years not all that far behind BHP and Rio.

Two gold producers were upgraded to “overweight” recommendations in the Barrenjoey report – Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) and Bellevue Gold (ASX:BGL) – with Barrenjoey stating its preferred gold exposures were Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM), Northern Star, Greatland Resources (ASX:GGP) and Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS).

Greatland Resources Ltd probably undertook the greatest transformation for an AIM company over the past year and that was not just because of its redomicile to Australia. The acquisition of 70% of the Havieron gold copper project in Australia that it did not own from Newmont Corporation was a game changer. Greatland Resources originally owned all of Havieron, but Newmont earned the stake by financing exploration.

Havieron is a much more advanced project than it was prior to the earn-in and it has been confirmed that it is a major resource. A feasibility study is due before the end of 2025. The mineral resource estimate is seven million ounces of gold and 275,000 tonnes of copper.

An ASX listing was obtained after the acquisition and just over £30 million of cash was raised to finance development of the Havieron project. Newmont owns 9.9% of Greatland Resources.

The acquisition of the Telfer mine at the end of 2024 provides cash generation for the group. Greatland expects gold production to be between 260,000 and 310,000 ounces at an all in sustaining cost of A$2,400-A$2,800/ounce in the year to June 2026.
