Barrick Gold’s Mark Bristow is on the hunt for takeovers as rival Newmont tries to push through a mega-deal, forecasting a market rally in his company’s two key commodities.

The pugnacious chief executive of the world’s second-largest gold mining group expects gold and copper prices to rise, lifting mining stocks.

His comments mark a step up in the serial dealmaker’s M&A rhetoric after playing down the need to counter the world’s largest gold company Newmont’s $19.5bn all-share non-binding bid for Australia’s Newcrest.

He added that the group had the “luxury of picking and choosing M&A opportunities” after improving operations following its takeover of Randgold five years ago and a four-year effort to build a strong exploration team.

“Because of our broad footprint of exploration across all prospective tier-one gold and copper jurisdictions, we have our geologists on the front lines. We have a much better understanding of the M&A activity than most of our peers,” he said.

Newcrest granted Newmont, the industry leader, an exclusivity period to conduct due diligence that ends next Thursday...

The most recent round of mining mergers and acquisitions is just the tip of the iceberg, according to former Sprott chief executive Peter Grosskopf, who says the sector will be reshaped over the next few years amid a potentially record-breaking spree of corporate activity.

Mr Grosskopf just led the management buyout of Sprott’s investment banking and advisory business, Sprott Capital Partners – now named SCP Resource Finance. Before leading the spin-out he was Sprott Inc’s chief executive for a decade, and is also a board member of gold major Agnico Eagle and the World Gold Council.

The 35-year industry veteran told The Australian he has rarely been as excited about the outlook for M&A in the mining industry through his career, as the solid balance sheets at the world’s biggest resource companies look set to combine with booming demand for battery-making commodities and thin development options to create a perfect storm on capital markets.

“I think there’s good days ahead for the industry because the majors trade at quite reasonable cash flow multiples now. And yet they haven’t inspired many people in terms of their potential growth of reserves or production,” he said.

This year is already shaping up as a bumper time for mergers and acquisitions in the resources sector, after BHP closed its acquisition of OZ Minerals while Newmont’s merger with Newcrest Mining is almost a done deal and Glencore edges closer to capturing Canada’s Teck Resources and spinning out both company’s coal assets.

Mr Grosskopf told The Australian the “industrial logic” of size was driving a need to compete for attention on global capital markets, pushing major mining companies to look for growth through acquisitions. “Generalist investors don’t care to own small companies. Capital markets have just got so big that in order to be relevant to a generalist investor, mining companies need to be in the $US10bn range,” he said.

“That’s driving deals to make major companies bigger. It also creates a draft in its wake – smaller companies also either getting acquired or acquiring each other and merging with each other to try and go beyond the status of single mining companies.

“The majors seem to be increasingly hungry. The intermediates are feeling vulnerable, so they’re wondering if they do their own deals to bulk up. And among the juniors, everybody is talking to everybody. I can’t see how the environment cools down. I think we’re going to potentially hit some records here.”...

Exactly, and, as a long term investor, I'm more than happy to, essentially, sit back, and watch what happens. There is nothing that anyone can do, until this all pans out, one way or another. When it does, we'll have a vote anyway.

That all said, one of the very best things too, IMHO, is that we have one of the most experienced company Managing Director's in the Australian mining industry, at this time, together with a Board, comprised of some, if not the best, people in the industry too!

Back in the green. It would be nice to end the week further north, and also a positive indication too.

Your guess is as good as mine Ben, I'm afraid. I've given up guessing, but have always maintained it's been manipulated for some considerable time now, but don't really want to get into a debate about it. Like most here, I'm sure, I just want to see a sustained, steady rise going forward.

A nice close @ 8.7p, up 6.1%!

As always though, the big question is whether or not the rise will finally be sustained this time around.

If we can go north again tomorrow, then I'll be even happier, but, at the same time, it's not like it shouldn't be significantly higher anyway, above this ludicrous level, IMHO!

Maybe, with all that's going on in the background, this really will be the sustained move north that we've all been waiting for, for some considerable time now.

Only time will tell...

Greatland Gold (LON:GGP) and Mosman Oil and Gas (LON:MSMN) are both progressing corporate plans for further listings.

Earlier this week Greatland Gold announced the appointment of Australian-based corporate lawyer Yasmin Broughton as an Independent Non-Executive Director ahead of the group’s planned listing on the ASX.

Ms Broughton has considerable experience in that market and her skills will be extremely useful as the group pursues its additional listing in Q4 this year.

The £440m capitalised Greatland group is now evaluating a corporate reorganisation, which could mean that the company will sit under a new parent that will be incorporated in Australia.

Obviously, that will need significant approvals from the group shareholders, the UK courts and then also the relevant listing authorities.

Such a move would not interfere with the company’s AIM listing, therefore protecting the mass of UK shareholders.

Greatland is a mining development and exploration company focused primarily on precious and base metals.

Its flagship asset is the world-class Havieron gold-copper project in the Paterson Province of Western Australia, which was discovered by Greatland and is presently under development in joint venture with ASX gold major, Newcrest Mining Limited.

Newcrest Mining is currently ‘in play’ following a bid approach from global resource group Newmont Mining.

There have been suggestions that if Newmont wins control of Newcrest then Greatland might get the opportunity to buy out its JV interest in due course, for which additional investor interest would be very helpful...
