Canberra, 17 June 2020 – The revised General Safety Regulation, issued by the European Commission earlier this year, incorporates the requirement for all motor vehicles to have a system for drowsiness and fatigue detection installed in all new models from July 2022, and all new vehicles from July 2024, as reported by a UK magazine Commercial Motor.

A final technical specification of what exactly will constitute a driver drowsiness and warning system will be issued by the end of this year, and will help the industry to prepare in time for adoption in coming years.

As the magazine reports, this is only going to be the first stage of the process, with the second stage to follow up right after, requiring all types of vehicles to fit an advanced system for detecting driver distraction. This requirement will be applied to all new models from July 2024 and all new vehicles from July 2026

Audi has opened an office in Silicon Valley that aims to adapt and develop advanced driver assistance systems for the U.S. market.

The Audi Automated Driving Development (A2D2) R&D office will be located in San Jose and initially staffed with about 60 employees. The company said A2D2 will have the “flexibility to quickly develop new software and to collaborate with nearby startups for production-intent applications.”

The focus on Level 2 is an important distinction. Audi had developed a Level 3 automated system called Traffic Jam Pilot that was supposed to be in the latest-generation A8 that debuted in 2017. After numerous delays, Audi decided in May to scrap plans to roll out the Level 3 automated driving system. Traffic Jam Pilot theoretically allows the vehicle to operate on its own without the human driver keeping their eyes on the road. But it has never been commercially deployed.

Now, Audi has turned its attention and capital toward advanced driving assistance systems that can actually be launched in passenger vehicles. A2D2 will be the first office dedicated to developing ADAS hardware and software specifically for North American roads and driving behaviors, the company said.

Audi is also working on automated driving technology with Car.Software, a newly founded Volkswagen Group unit. All Volkswagen Group brands have concentrated their automated driving development activities within this unit, the company said.

It is an old CES demo, not a real cat ready system, the telling clue is the mention of Intel. They were keen to get in to auto, but it wasn't really their game, power requirements for their chips etc. In the end, probably due to their financial state, they selected a competitor - smart eye for many design wins with start of production in 2019.

Fast forwards to CES 2020,Qualcomm and Seeing Machines are working on a DMS to install in the infotainment system of a premium OEM. I wonder which one?

The highest technical barrier before application of vision-based DMS technology is its performance in high or low light which may lead to all white or all black images, respectively. In this case, even the most advanced algorithms won't work.

Usually around late summer, car dealerships begin trotting out the first batch of new models.

This year you'll have to wait.

With the coronavirus pandemic slamming the auto industry, certain 2021 vehicles will arrive late as automakers have put the brakes on dozens of debuts.

“We’ve seen quite a few delays,” said Jeff Schuster, president of global vehicle forecasts for research firm LMC Automotive.

While there’s yet to be a new model canceled publicly, at least 24 redesigned or new North American-built vehicles that were poised to roll out in the coming months won’t come out on time, according to LMC Automotive, which provided a partial list to USA TODAY. They include the Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade and Acura MDX.

Though designers and engineers are largely able to work from home, plant shutdowns and a sales slowdown have caused the delays.

Overall, automakers had planned to launch 38 redesigned or new 2021 model-year vehicles in the 2020 calendar year. A vehicle is generally considered redesigned when its styling, size, chassis, or powertrain have been substantially overhauled.

Of those 38, five have already launched, including the Tesla Model Y crossover, while 12 have been delayed within the year and 12 have been pushed into next year, according to LMC.

And some are “still at risk to slip into next year,” Schuster said.

The highest-profile delay is for the highest-profile vehicle: the Ford F-150.

Ford is also expected to delay the rollout of the highly anticipated return of the Ford Bronco SUV, which was set to begin production in December but now won't start

Ford Mustang Mach-E: from July to September.
Toyota Sienna 500B: from July to September.
Cadillac Escalade: from July to August.

Who are either far sighted individuals mapping out the future for the benefit of mankind or patent trolls trying to put an innovation tax on future inventions without having to try to build it themselves. A big clue is how many potential ideas are tagged on so that one patent can snag more potential revenue streams and block as many paths as possible.

But on the plus side, they are in this for the money and it is better to licence early rather than wait until the infringing product has made you millions because that is when they like to sue.

UD, Free software api, possibly with a non-commercial use clause in the Ts and Cs. Who would use such software, just a range of universities and students who are weaned onto your starter drug?

Several years later, these students get jobs designing systems and they are going to be looking favourably at your technology as they already have the experience.

Supporting software and hardware has a cost, technologies move on and you need to update to support more cameras and new interfaces. Bugs and support calls can drag at your development team when a new version of Windows or a patch breaks your system. By now there are more free open source software solutions available, our solution is no longer unique. But our original seeds are ready to harvest... and our business is now in a different place.

I'm no patent lawyer, but the patents give us a view into the state of the art 18+ months ago. It tells us the problems that needed to be solved and possible solutions that we have found and sought to patent. Where the patent is not granted, we may need to pay to licence those parts that we depend on, find another path that weaves through and around the protected ideas, or challenge those patents. Of course we are watching from a long distance with an imperfect view. We may never know which way see go, or even if they have decided to keep some of their secret sauce unpatented but out of sight.

If there is something to pay, it will be cents against our dollar. After all these patents are not the full recipe and one ingredient that we know they add is the 4 billion kilometers of real life data with its rich tapestry of edge cases. You can't build that up quickly or cheaper no matter how good your patents

Allowing the aircraft to wake the pilot or unlock the c0ckpit door is the pilot is unresponsive, all as part of a sleep management system

Drawing the jaw line in the video tells us much about this demo, they have never trained it with beards, face masks etc. It may get embedded in some aftermarket devices or low end cars in China, but that is not our target market. We are with Qualcomm for the high and hopefully middle market outside of China.

Good to see Simon Stent from TRI again. I wonder how they will maintain a decent frame rate on the driver's eyes, if they are adjusting the other illumination for the passengers. Perhaps they need our patent: WO2019241834 - HIGH FRAME RATE IMAGE PRE-PROCESSING SYSTEM AND METHOD

Alex Roy will not let it rest if Argo didn't t support a no BS DMS. However, Argo don't build cars, just the "stack". It is up to the OEMs to build the cars and use an appropriate DMS. We know Ford likes our DMS chip, let's hope they tell VW.
But as Alex would say, there are no Autonomous Vehicles available to buy today and Argo's software is still testing.
