The ‘Moving Forward Act', the strongest automotive safety bill in decades, has now been passed in the House of Representatives. The bill is focused on advancing safety technologies proven to reduce crash and harm and to make sure strong safety standards are in place to save lives. The bill, which now needs to be passed in the Senate, will mandate automatic braking, lane-keeping, blind-spot detection, event data recorders as well as DMS in all cars and trucks sold in the US from 2024. This aligns with the European General Safety Regulation, which passed into law in November 2019.
However, in the EU, the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) has requested a 2-year delay for the introduction of the 2022 Euro-NCAP protocols due to the projected lengthy time that will be needed to recover from the effects of COVID-19. Euro NCAP has agreed, and a delay is now expected to the 2022 and 2024 rating. The new dates will give automakers and Tier 1 suppliers more time to incorporate the necessary changes given the events of recent months with a number of manufacturers announcing 12 month delays to new models.

Ok so some shots of driving a pre-production car that has most of the displays shielded, we know that this is common practice. I have seen some myself in Death Valley . But what I haven't seen in traditional cars is a BIG RED STOP BUTTON! That normally happens in AV testing. Now I presume that this is not Level 3, but just testing the hands free driving or level 2 In caution, they have a stop button so they can take back control (they are testing after all!)

I guess that if you RNS it you admit that the contract has gone. Perhaps the way our contract is written, with Stage and Gate, we are still at the Sample A stage awaiting a technical acceptance before we move to a production sample.

If the company turns around it will still need DMS even if it drops back to Level 2 driving only. Although any white knight may try to renegotiate the contract

Looks like Byton's Level 3 AV and DMS went the same way as the Delorean's wind-down windows.

Oh dear, Byton ( let's call them Delorean ) had such a great future. I hope that Geely can get them back to the future, but I think this will go the way of the DMC.

I think you have gone the other way. It is sales model year, so production will start 2023 H2.
Covid will not be causing the same disruptions by then.
Also, consider that Honda is one of Veoneer's biggest customers so our DMS is likely to appear in models even if they doubt get SuperCruise

Production of these Honda electric vehicles will combine the development expertise of both companies, and they will be manufactured at GM plants in North America. Sales are expected to begin in the 2024 model year in Honda’s United States and Canadian markets.

GM and Honda have an ongoing relationship around electrification. This includes work on fuel cells and the Cruise Origin, an electric, self-driving and shared vehicle, which was revealed in San Francisco earlier this year. Honda also joined GM’s battery module development efforts in 2018.

Terry, I admire your optimism, but Vauxhall is now a brand of PSA. Saab was sold to a Dutch company, then sold again. Pontiac might still be a GM brand, but is dormant. But GM do still have and make GMC, Dodge, Chevy, Buick with Hummer due to return

I can't imagine that Byton's volume would be factored in to the SP. It will have been useful engineering fees on the way and one day will feed into the profits. But should generate some good press when it finally arrives.

SHANGHAI -- China-based electric car startup Byton, which has planned sales in the U.S., said Tuesday it will suspend production starting July 1 to conduct a reorganization of the automaker after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company, which is backed by state-owned automaker FAW Group and battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology, said it was also actively raising funds to address issues relating to unpaid staff salaries and that it hoped to start paying employees from July.

The suspension is set to last six months, closely held Byton told staff in an email seen by Bloomberg News.

"The new coronavirus epidemic has brought great challenges to Byton's financing and production operations," the company said in a statement. "After careful consideration and joint consultations with our shareholders and management, we have decided to, from July 1, kickstart a plan to lower employee costs and promote the company's strategic reorganization."

Byton produces all of its vehicles at a plant in Nanjing. Starting Wednesday it will suspend most operations in China, where its activities include research and development.

In April, industry website Electrek reported that Byton had put hundreds of employees from its Santa Clara facility in California on furlough.

Byton was launched in September 2017 by Future Mobility Corp, a company co-founded by former BMW and Nissan executives, and also has software and design facilities in the United States and Germany.

Byton earlier this year said it planned to launch sales of its first product, the M-Byte electric crossover, in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, France, the Netherlands and Sweden in the second half of 2021.

The automaker said in November it received licenses to sell the vehicle in California in a move that Byton said paves the way for North American sales in 2021.

Byton is among a series of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing startups that have emerged in recent years to challenge foreign companies like Tesla.

China, which has been eager to curb smog and spur its own auto industry, has said it wants so-called new energy vehicles to account for 25 percent of auto sales by 2025, up from around 5 percent currently.

But the appetite to fund such startups began falling last year and has been dealt a further, heavy blow by the coronavirus pandemic, leaving a number fighting to survive.

In May, sales of NEVs fell for an 11th month to 82,000 units, China's largest auto industry association said. NEVs include battery-powered electric, plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Mobileye will have a reference specification for how to implement their system. We do for ours and so will other tier 2s. The tier 1,in this case Magna will build upon those base specifications with their APIs to join the various systems into the whole - to their own plan, or customised for the OEM where additional help is required they will pay engineering fees to the tier 2s to extend the APIs or to add extra functionality. (API = application program interface).

Unfortunately, this patent depends and wraps in dozens and dozens of other parents (by reference no. only) so fully understanding it could take weeks!

Essentially, it would require a vector with an origin (where the eyes are and where they are looking) converted into the appropriate coordinates for the exterior vision system. The mobile eye system would also need to either export all the objects that it is tracking or at least concerned about. It it could be extended to to the confirmation that the necessary objects have been seen. Certainly, this is what See could do and we saw it demonstrated on the BMW stage.

Ford Motor isn't worried about new features on its redesigned F-150 pricing people out of the increasingly expensive full-size pickup market, according to the company's chief operating officer, Jim Farley.

"This is content people want and are more than willing to pay for," he said Friday on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "People are happy to pay if the product is more productive."

Ford has not announced pricing for the new F-150. Starting pricing on 2020 models ranges from about $30,000 to $70,000.

The full-size pickup segment has increasingly gotten more expensive in the past decade as new models and features are released. The average price paid for F-150 pickups this year is more than $49,000, according to auto research firm Edmunds.

"With Ford's large base of buyers serving as a test bed for new features, the next generation is sure to push F-150 well past an average price of $50,000" said Ivan Drury, senior manager of insights at Edmunds

Thinking about the relative costs of the hardware, the required hardware install for Active Drive Assist is likely to be a more powerful computer and perhaps better/more external sensors. If that involves changing the mirror unit and adding an extra module it is practical as the cost of adding those as standard may be significant. If we are in the steering column, I would expect that to be a standard part as the cost of sticking twice the number of steering columns (colours, trims etc) against the cost of our camera and xilinx chip is insignificant.
