I've just read the Xilinx patent. Yes some great stuff there, but it is for data centres (that is where the "cloud" lives), not automotive.

Hi JC, been busy this weekend, so only just caught up with the posts. My first thought in the Xilinx patent is that it may be useful in some situations, but probably not relevant to us.

Now, the instructors don't often sit behind you in the ****pit of real aircraft, so what does that mean?
Well, I am sure you all know about the "Black box" or Flight Data Recorder but it isn't just about crashes, this data is actually really useful for managing the fleet. Guess which company is quite big in the world of Flight Data Monitoring?

L3H, provide solutions so that all the data from a flight can be analysed. Useful for looking at patterns such as over-rotation on take off, or over speeding with flaps out. Adding gaze data to the FDR is a simple way to unlock far more insights to how the aircraft are flown and to the state of mind of the pilots. Are they stressed, tired, what minor bad habits have they developed that could lead to a future incident. What are they not checking? If you saw the video that Seeing Machines posted (see Lewbo post) you can see the pilot checks he is on the centre line, then the speed the pattern is repeated until the airspeed reaches the point for rotation now he also checks the wings are level etc

I expect that gaze tracking being logged for later analysis on aircraft is just one of many ways that L3H will use the data.

With PMcG's recent investor shows with 1-1 discussions on the side I expect that there are some funds sniffing around. They don't like to tie up their money too early and are now elbowing their way to the front of the dinner line.

They know what is coming, we all know what is coming, but they have timing and big wadges of cash, so panic and sell all you can to make them and the MMs some money.

Oh and by "any device" they mean PC, Apple and Android. Certainly not automotive.

Interesting paper, but you have got to remember that Microsoft has dozens and dozens of researchers working on overlapping fields. Much of the research will never get used. MS already use Tobii in Windows 10 to log into your PC with the camera.

Of course we have a new "competitor" entering the market in 2023. I expect that they will quickly eat into the SEYE market share in subsequent years (and ours) but luckily we are supplying Qualcomm with our technology, so we get paid either way.

Be careful with your maths. Taking 2017 annual sales from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_manufacturers_by_motor_vehicle_production
11 out of 20 OEMs could be 80% or it could be 32% if you assume that they are taking all the production from those OEMs and that that worldwide production is only by the top 20.

Since they probably include Audi as part of VW as their wins (even though they have never achieved production), and a small part of GM even though it is likely for Chinese market only, we can further temper their figures. I would guess that they have more of the 1, 2 and 3 million a year OEMs and hardly any of the 10 million a year OEMs Toyota and VW output.

My rough analysis assuming that they do still get 100% of some European groups is that based on the OEMs that I think, that they think they have won is likely to be closer to 25-30% of cars with DMS. These are rough figures and purely based on my untrustworthy opinion

I would take that as a smack down by Volvo. When we got one after rumours, our share price went up. I suspect the same won't happen to SEYE

Nice little patent, TI looking at all the places where their chips can be used. In this case, remove those big flappy mirrors and replace with tiny cameras, remove any warping from the camera lens and display on a suitable location in the car. So why is JC interested, well in the old days of glass mirrors, you could set the mirror to the desired angle, then If you moved your head, you would change the view appropriately. We don't get that feature when watching TV, but we need it here so TI will need head tracking. Now you are not going to put in head tracking just for your wrong mirrors, so they will take the head position from the DMS.

Now, did you spot what happened there? The DMS, stopped being an optional piece of passive safety equipment, if it is required to replace the mirrors, then 95% isn't anywhere near good enough. This has to be the highest grade of accuracy, so you better select the best automotive quality DMS or you will be stuck with glass mirrors that are so last decade!

I needed a sleep detector system while slogging through JAPAN AEROSPACE Exploration patent.

First, this is academic research, not for an immediate commercial product. It seeks to solve the "problem" of a PVT test taking 3-20 minutes of staring at a screen pressing a button when some thing happens to measure drowsiness!

It does present plenty of good primary research showing various correlations between levels of tiredness and PERCLOS, blink frequency, speed of eye movements (saccades) etc.it then goes on to define machines that could use these measurements to identify drowsiness. It already has many of the clauses removed, it would be better presented as an academic paper rather than a patent application, when Seeing Machines already does this.

I wouldn't look for Aby parallels between this and other work because it is so purely academic and so far behind and unaware of what is hitting the market this month!

Esc, I wouldn't be that harsh on Comma's users, they are not rich and dumb like the Tesla video makers. These are likely enthusiasts who do their research and have to build and install it themselves.

It does contain a simple DMS which doesn't have eye tracking or IR so isn't going to be great at night. But I am glad that innovators still can innovate before regulations step in

Thanks JC, it is good to see that Seeing Machines are still pushing out patents, this one builds on a similar patent from 2017, it extends the methods used for measuring and controlling the light levels, after all it is these tweaks that give a percentage improvement over previous versions, to enable high availability and high accuracy in all conditions. Also each claim in a patent makes the defensive moat deaper and wider.

This one even mentions convertibles, pilot training and monitoring, and tracking consumer glances in market research
