Eye Tracking: A Window into Pilot Behaviors to Support Evidence-Based Training

This paper identifies use cases for eye tracking in simulator-based flight crew training. The authors explore the potential benefits to instructors and flight crew, and illustrate how such technology could be integrated into existing and future training environments.

Aviation instructors are limited in their ability to directly observe – and therefore accurately assess – trainees’ instrument scan behaviors, which directly impacts their ability to train effective scanning techniques. As a result, trainees develop scanning techniques organically based on their prior experience. Eye-tracking technology will, for the first time, enable instructors to understand instrument scanning strategies as currently employed, and objectively assess the effectiveness of various scanning behaviors.

The introduction of eye-tracking technology is especially impactful in the HUD training domain where the aviation human factors community has identified significant issues including HUD training and attention capture – a term used to describe the distribution of attention to near-HUD elements and far-outside stimulus. HUDs were originally introduced to enhance safety by improving situational awareness and provide operators with lower approach minima and their safety benefits have resulted in many of the current generation of single- and multi-crew aircraft types now offering HUD systems as an option. HUD training, however, presents unique challenges for the instructor. Eye-tracking technology enables objective measurement of a pilot’s distribution of attention across in-HUD scanning and transition to and from other ****pit instruments, enabling higher-quality instruction and enhancing training outcomes.

Finally, the authors will illustrate how eye-tracking technology could be integrated into existing and future training environments for simulator-based flight crew training of the HUD.

I know that there is a lot of work going into V2X communications between vehicles and the road environment, but it is a space that I just can't commit my head to yet. Good to see that the preliminary work is happening though.

In not sure what AVCC is about, we know that autonomy is receding rapidly, I would like to see AVCC working on standardising terminology for its members.

I suppose its main remit is AV, so I guess that its members are committed perhaps to sharing some of their parents in particular areas. So we are seeing all the fruit of work in those areas. I don't think that it is all friendly, once the businesss are committed there can be some bullying based on who has the most patents as they can threaten to take their ball home if they don't get their way.

Not all eye tracking is the same. SEE have to find the face, then the eye. Head mounted systems have some things easy - custom fitted helmets engineered for each user and professionally maintained. So they the eye is always where it is supposed to be! Of course there are a few new problems like minimising weight, and thinking about where on the helmet the weight is. After all pilots may have to wear the helmet and still see out of it at 7G. One method consideted here is to have the HUD system to project Red, Blue, green and the IR light from the same chip. By projecting the colours and IR separately, it ensures that the eye is dark other than the projected light, so doesn't pick up the projected image with the eye tracking camera. The same curved screen is used by the projector and the camera on place of heavy lenses - clever.

This is more about Toyota's method of developing Guardian and Chauffeur, not about technology to put on cars directly.
We have test drivers in well instrumented vehicles and the driver facing camera is recording the gaze which is then mapped to the feed from the front camera. Ok so far.
The research vehicle also has physiological sensors to measure sweating, pulse rate and brown trousers etc. So the data is all recorded along with harsh braking or stearing, to identify events and also using the eye gaze data identify the precursor risks that the human driver saw - based on what they were looking at. This data is then used to train AI, so that if it detects the car in front slam on the brakes, or a child or animal running towards the car then it knows that this is a risky event that the car should be aware of and prepare to react to, including alerting the driver

This particular model is probably part of the Joyson expansion RNS ($7M) I think and -*NOT* the Qualcomm (eDME) from 2023.

The bottom model XL is the bargain basement model, the only reason it sells is because the dealers are forced to take some.
It is there to get the headline $34k ish price out in the market.

XLT is the highest seller, but still pretty bare bones. After that it is all about aspirational pricing and American's do love their trucks. So those top end models still sell massive volumes, bigger than many of the DW that SEYE crow about

Just to clarify, The patent that Seeing Machines have recently placed a Request for Continued Examination against is not a phone. It is better than that!

Think about it a Seeing Machine phone would be either Apple or Android, so you have upset one of those camps. To roll it out across the business would wipeout any previous investments in kit, or cause delays while the existing phones get used a bit longer, etc.

Instead the patent is just for a docking station with inbuilt IR camera and IR lights you add your own existing phone. So businesses can roll this out at anypoint irrespective of the relative age of the phone. The only consideration would be to order the appropriate power connector.

Yes S2020, there was a consortium of companies OpenSynergy, that were working on virtualising Android to run on cars - that means they can run the Android operating system safely alongside the Adas software on the same hardware. Since Google are keen to get into auto, and with Qualcomm's new found eye tracking experience, this could open up new avenues.

OK, I get it now, this Bosch patents is just the latest extention of a patent from 2015, they just keep adding bits on. We have always assumed that B were partnered with SEE. But if course in a sense B were our competitors, because, before DMS there was Bosch's coffee cup. That cafine receptical was a good money spinner for B and if it wasn't for the regulation they would still be selling it in 10 years or more. So, let's assume that B are still our partners, then why are they still fighting for an old patent. Well because it is still a land grab. They know that SEE are the best, and they want to lock the competition out of the next easy solution. The denser the trees in the patent forest then the harder it is to make your own path. They want to partner with SEE for premier and mid mass market, and still be able to sell their coffee cups until then and afterwards in the easier markets where DMS is not mandated.

Incidentally, JC the patent does mention ASIC but that is a bit as surprising as to find that plumbers use copper pipes - it is just one of the 'standard' ways to do these things.
