The European Central Bank took a first step on Wednesday towards launching a digital version of the euro, part of a global drive to meet growing demand for electronic means of payment and tackle a boom in cryptocurrencies.
The main aim of the initiative is to avoid leaving digital payments to the private sector, particularly if the use of physical cash starts dwindling, like it has in Sweden.

A UBS survey of central bank reserve managers found the most-cited potential threat was that digital coins could lead to banks being disintermediated, which might upset financial stability.
FYI, (disintermediated - reduce or eliminate the use of intermediaries between producers and consumers) in other words bypassing banks, the ECB will be the intermediary.

The ECB will also start talks with European Union lawmakers to seek legislative changes that may be needed because the digital euro was not foreseen by EU Treaties.
Bit to do there yet then, so glad the UK is not involved with yet more treaty fiddling, we've been on the receiving end of a few of those.

If this latest diktat comes to fruition, Sweden has two options, either pay the carbon border tariff, or for example, cultivate homegrown clean iron ore extraction.

The European Union is set to take the lead in climate policy action among the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters this week.
“Everybody has a target. But translating it into policies that lead to real emission reductions, that’s the most difficult part,”

Brussels will also unveil the details of its world-first carbon border tariff, targeting imports of goods produced abroad with high emissions such as steel and cement. That has unnerved EU trading partners, including Russia and China.

Policymakers are also braced for a storm of industry lobbying. Europe’s steel and cement sectors are already fighting plans to end free CO2 permits and force manufacturers to pay more when they pollute.

The OBR's report underestimates indirect costs of net zero transition.
Plenty of noise was made this week about the Office for Budget Responsibility’s (OBR) ‘Fiscal Risks Report‘, which outlined the potential costs of the government’s transition to net zero by 2050: £1.4 trillion over 30 years, three-quarters of which would be borne by households and private businesses. If that weren’t staggering enough, the Global Warming Policy Forum (GWPF) has found that the OBR’s projections still didn’t sufficiently capture the indirect economic effects of the transition, and that their analysis depends on a series of “optimistic assumptions“. In other words: it may well be even worse…

Most of the OBR’s cost assumptions are built on the estimates of the Climate Change Committee, whose figures appear rosy at the best of times: even their most pessimistic projection expects 75% of electricity to come from renewables by 2035, with over 70% of households using hydrogen for heating within a similar window. And all this is assuming the economy doesn’t stagnate or contract.

The GWPF report adds:

“It is no exaggeration to say that everything in both the CCC’s and the OBR’s cost assessment depends on their optimistic assumption that the cost of renewable electricity will drop significantly.”

“[The] indirect economic effects, correctly identified but not adequately examined by the OBR, will be severely negative for the economy as a whole and the public finances, with stuttering economic activity and stagnant or even falling tax receipts.”

The net zero time frame target was unrealistic even before the pandemic; now, given the precarity of the post-Covid economy, it’s starting to look a bit ridiculous.

Just because you can't get a bag of cement to build an indoor bog doesn't mean the construction industry is in decline. There maybe little going on up there in Sturgeon land, probably because all the talent has gone south, and who can blame them.
There's plenty of new construction going on around the country, although not up to pre Covid levels but enough for locals getting irate about all the new builds, NIMBY.
For info - Construction output in the UK is more than £110 billion per annum and contributes 7% of GDP (ref. Government Construction Strategy). Approximately a quarter of construction output is public sector and three-quarters is private sector.
Construction is a naturally volatile industry and can turn in an instant, but talk of its demise is somewhat premature IMO.
