First I should say that the chances of an investment platform going bust and investors losing money is very small but it is possible and has happened in the past.
Let’s look at would could happen.
Platform 121 has discovered a fraud and is very concerned and looking at the figures it is marginal whether they can survive and is just on the side of bankruptcy. What do they do, if they release this information they are finished so 2 choices, go bankrupt or tough it out. If they go bankrupt let say administers fee is not covered but as they have large amounts invested with them and there is only 10% required from investors, so investors get £85,000 + 90% of their funds over £85,000, not good but not life changing. In the real world they will probably try to tough it out at the very least BOD get salaries for longer. This news will most likely leak out and those in the know will exit the platform with 100% of their funds, the word spreads and it gets noticed, then more exit as no smoke without fire kicks in and then a panic. That fine if you get out but you could be pot holing, holiday to Timbuktu, medical emergency etc. You miss out and now in administration, 80% of the funds have gone so instead of the 10% loss on funds over £85,000 you are now get 40%. Not saying this will happen but one way too look at it.
Another scenario is a melt down of the markets as investors pull out costs could overwhelm profits and which platforms have a good buffer.
You also need to see where your funds are, if trading account then to get out in time not too much of a problem as you can buy the same assets with another platform and if within 30 days so no CGT issues. If ISA you could liquidate and lose the tax relief on the funds or try to transfer but will probably not be enough time. If SIPP depending on your age if you take funds out and tax to pay as again probably not be enough time to transfer.
Although government may well step in I don't think there will be much appetite to protect investors with large sums, i.e. over £85,000.
This for me makes it worth the time to check out who owns these platforms which should not only add extra security but all due diligence.
