The automotive industry has been recently transformed into a battleground of innovation. Autonomous driving technology and advanced driver assist systems have been at the forefront of this skirmish. Two titans of the industry currently stand out in this dynamic landscape. Cadillac's Super Cruise and Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems appear to be pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving, but one of these systems is more advanced. Cadillac's Super Cruise quietly emerged as a strong contender that redefines the way we perceive and interact with autonomous driving. Tesla has admittedly dominated headlines with its futuristic approach, but fundamental flaws have been uncovered in its technology.
General Motors’ motto for Cadillac's self-driving Super Cruise technology is “Unburdened Hands, Focused Gaze.” This autonomous system is found on Cadillac products as well as cars from Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick. GM's semi-autonomous technology operates by amalgamating information from its standard array of cameras and LiDAR sensors with mapping data. The vehicle acquires foresight into upcoming road conditions utilizing GPS mapping, while the cameras and sensors provide a real-time understanding of its immediate surroundings. Super Cruise uses satellite navigation, cruise control, and lane-keeping systems to skillfully manage the steering system with little to no intervention from the driver.
What sets Super Cruise apart from FSD is its reduced frequency of prompting the driver to resume control compared to alternative systems. This action is only triggered when the system loses sight of lane markings or detects an impending hazard. Cadillac fitted the Super Cruise option to the Lyriq, Escalade, XT6, CT4, CT5, and CT6 between 2018 and 2023. This option has temporarily been put on ice until General Motors recovers from the semiconductor shortage experienced due to lockdown measures implemented to help curb the spread of COVID-19. These cars can be fitted with a catalog of advanced driver assist systems, but the autonomous driving feature remains delisted on its configurator. When available, Cadillac's Super Cruise cost a flat fee of $2,500 or a monthly subscription fee of $25. Interestingly, GM currently offers the feature for some Chevrolet products. Cadillac has hinted that a variation of Super Cruise will be introduced to upcoming models, but no confirmed date has been provided.
