Bus Driver Fatigue: the Mayor admits that TfL has yet to undertake “a Short Term Review of Shift Lengths, Patterns and Rotas” as recommended by the UCL Institute of Health Equity in 2021. UCL IHE’s contracted research on London Bus Driver Deaths from Covid-19 suggested that Bus Driver Fatigue might be worse as a result of Covid-19 and recommended that it should be investigated by TfL immediately. But nothing has been done since UCL advised TfL to act in March 2021. I find this lack of action by TfL and the Mayor hard to fathom, especially after (a) a 2017 study by Loughborough University evidenced London bus driver fatigue was a chronic and widespread problem that resulted in collisions (b) Unite’s huge turnout in favour of industrial action to protest London bus driver fatigue in early 2020 and, (c) Bus Drivers reporting that fatigue is now worse than ever.

Good news for those looking to buy Ford’s electric truck. Ford Motor announced Tuesday that F-150 Lightning orders have increased by 600% following the drastic price cuts last month. The automaker says it’s now on track to triple annual production capacity by this fall to meet the higher demand.

Ford ups Lightning production to satisfy higher orders

Following a six-week revamp and expansion at the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, the company expects to hit its targeted annual run rate of 150,000 electric truck models by this fall.

Although the temporary shutdown at Ford’s EV plant limited customer deliveries over the past few months, Ford says it’s ready to accelerate the ramp-up process to help meet the higher demand.

Fisker made a big splash today during its Product Vision Day 2023 event by revealing four new electric vehicles that will join the Ocean SUV in the next couple of years.

Taking center stage during its live event was the Ronin flagship electric supercar with 600 miles of range. It would be a "technology carrier" for showcasing innovations. Additionally, Fisker also revealed the Pear compact electric hatchback for the masses, Alaska pickup truck, and an adventure pack for the Ocean called the Force E.

Waymo said that it will kick off the process for a commercial robotaxi service in the city later this year. But that doesn’t mean passengers can hail one of the company’s driverless vehicles quite yet; Waymo’s playbook is to start with manual testing, following by supervised testing, fully autonomous driving, and then, eventually, passenger services. The company has been testing its vehicles on the streets of Austin since March, laying the groundwork for the eventual launch of a commercial ridehailing service.

The Honda Sensing 360 suite will feature a Super Cruise-like semi-autonomous driving system known as Advanced In-Lane Driving with Hands-off Function. While the name leaves a lot to be desired, the system will keep the vehicle centered in its lane while also controlling acceleration, braking, and steering. The system also has an Advanced Lane Change with Hands-off Function, which enables drivers to automatically change lanes when the semi-autonomous driving system is activated.

Putting hands-free driving aside, Honda’s Driver Emergency Support System aims to assist drivers who become incapacitated. It uses a camera to monitor the driver and see if their eyes are open and if their head is up.

If the driver becomes incapacitated, the system will keep the car centered in its lane while also giving audible and visible alerts to get the driver’s attention. If the driver fails to respond, the alerts will get louder and the accelerator will be disabled to prevent sudden, unintentional acceleration if the driver responds in a panic. If that doesn’t get the driver’s attention, the car’s horn and hazard lights will be activated as the vehicle slowly comes to a stop. The system can also call emergency responders as the incapacitated driver could be suffering a medical emergency such as a heart attack or stroke.

Although you can’t see much from the teaser, from what is shown, Acura’s first electric SUV will help bring the automaker into the new electric era.

The ZDX will be based on GM’s Ultium platform, which powers the current GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and upcoming Chevy Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV. Although Acura has yet to release final specs, the Ultium battery can scale from 50 kWh to over 200 kWh, enabling a gm-estimated +300 miles range.

Like cars from other manufacturers with automated driving systems — such as Ford and its BlueCruise, GM and its Super Cruise and BMW and its Driving Assistant Plus — later-model Teslas are equipped with what’s called a driver monitoring system. These systems embed sensors over the windshield to keep an eye on drivers and make sure they’re paying attention to the road. If not, the driver will hear a series of warnings, and eventually, if it concludes the driver’s not paying attention, the car comes to a stop. Bernal said in another test the system went 10 minutes before issuing a warning.

Colin Barndem, who follows the driver monitoring market for Semicast Research in London, said he ranks Tesla’s system “as the worst driver monitor system on the market. Last place … with no infrared illumination, it’s as close as possible to useless.”

The U.S. doesn’t set standards for driver monitoring systems, although NHTSA is researching the issue. Barndem notes that Europe already has such standards in place, and that “the U.S. is five years behind Europe.”

“NHTSA’s goal is to save lives,” Barndem said. “If they’re not going to follow the European example and set minimum standards, [loss of life] is what’s going to happen.”

NHTSA currently is investigating Tesla on a number of alleged defects, including sudden acceleration; sudden braking; steering wheel malfunctions; and crashes into police cars, firetrucks and ambulances while on Autopilot.
