With unsold electric vehicles backing up on the lots of rivals’ dealers, General Motors’ electric-vehicle rollout strategy for the fall is shaping up to be a key moment for Detroit when it comes reading an uncertain EV adoption curve.

But GM reiterated in its earnings this week that it will double production of EVs in the second half of the year, to 100,000 units – including the long-awaited introduction of an electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and EV versions of Chevy’s Equinox crossover and Blazer compact sport-utility vehicle. The company says it will reach 400,000 cumulative units of EV production by early 2024 and that its EV business will reach profitability by 2025.

Ten GM vehicle models are among the candidates for the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards, or NACTOY, competing for the “Best of 2024” award in a collaboration between the NACTOY organization and the Detroit Auto Dealers Association.

The GM vehicles are part of the initial group of eligible vehicles, with several more rounds ahead to narrow down the choices to a single winner in each category, NACTOY said in its announcement.

The Awards have consisted of three categories since 2017, with car, truck, and utility vehicle of the year segments. GM has a single candidate for the 2024 North American Car of the Year category, the hybrid-powered Chevy Corvette E-Ray that is new for the 2024 model year.

GM has three eligible vehicles in the 2024 North American Truck of the Year category. These include the all-electric, all-new Chevy Silverado EV with its available Midgate and Multi-Flex tailgate cargo features, plus a pair of ICE pickups, the midsize GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado.

The 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category is where GM truly shines, with six candidates, including several electric models. The list includes the new-for-North America Buick Envista, the refreshed Cadillac XT4, the all-new and highly popular second-generation 2024 Chevy Trax, the Chevy Blazer EV, the Chevy Equinox EV, and the GMC Hummer EV SUV.

BMW Raises Outlook for Vehicle Deliveries on Strong EV Demand

(Bloomberg) -- BMW AG is stepping up spending on its electric-car rollout after the luxury-car maker’s battery-vehicle deliveries more than doubled during the first half of the year.

The level of buyer interest in EVs means BMW is “investing more than originally planned in the global ramp-up of e-mobility,” Chief Financial Officer Walter Mertl said Thursday, adding that investments in batteries for the current and next generation of EVs are “massive.”

During the second quarter, development spending jumped by nearly a fifth to €1.84 billion ($2 billion).

Battery-powered car sales made up about 13% of group deliveries during the first half led by demand for models like the i4 sedan and iX3 SUV. Next year, the proportion of EV deliveries is set to rise to at least one-fifth, BMW said.

Incumbent carmakers are battling to catch up to Tesla Inc., which is pulling away in the global EV sales race following aggressive price cuts. In China, the most important market for Germany’s Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, local manufacturers like BYD Co. are increasingly dominating in EV sales.

The Ford F-150 Lightning Is on Fire 🔥

Ford restarted production of it F-150 Lightning truck on Tuesday following a six-week shutdown for retooling, during which demand surged sixfold for the vehicles.

The company said in a news release that orders for the Detroit automaker’s flagship electric truck surged after it slashed prices on several of its models, including a $10,000 cut on some F-150 Lightning models.

The F-150 Lightning Pro model is currently the cheapest in the line, with a $50,000 price tag. But the model is available for retail purchases in limited quantities, with the EV trucks currently reserved for customers who saved a spot in line when the model launched in 2021.

The automaker's Dearborn, Mich., factory reopened its doors Tuesday after its six-week expansion project, which puts the company on track to deliver a targeted annual rate of 150,000 trucks by fall. Ford hired about 1,200 new employees to support the production increase.

CUSTOMER WAIT TIMES TO SHRINK AS F-150 LIGHTNING XLT PRODUCTION SCALES;

DEARBORN, Mich, June 8, 2023 – Ford is on track to increase production of the F-150 Lightning® at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center this fall to reduce customer wait times. The high-demand F-150 Lightning XLT model gains the largest initial production increase with new retail orders made today estimated to deliver as early as September.

Ford also continues to accept retail customer orders for the Lariat® and Platinum models.

General Motors has promised to ramp up its Electric Vehicle (EV) production in the second half of 2023 after shipping just 36,322 EVs from January through June — about 2.8% of 1,295,186 new vehicles sold during the period.

From January to June, General Motors, still battling with supply chain issues and manufacturing EV challenges, sold just 4 GMC Hummer EVs and 2,316 units of the $59,000 Cadillac Lyriq luxury EV SUV.

Speaking on the sales decline, GM President of North America Rory Harvey blamed battery module availability as the big issue in terms of production figures.

Ford's ultimate goal is to ramp up EV production to a 2 million run rate.

Today, Ford (F) announced that it expects to reach a 600,000 EV production rate as the company ultimately aims to ramp up to a 2 million run rate. This news came as the company reported its Q2 2023 earnings.

Regarding its expected 600,000 EV production rate, the company had this to say:

Revenue from Ford Model e’s first-generation electric vehicles increased 39% in the second quarter; sequentially, revenue more doubled. “The near-term pace of EV adoption will be a little slower than expected, which is going to benefit early movers like Ford,” Farley said. “EV customers are brand loyal and we’re winning lots of them with our high-volume, first-generation products; we’re making smart investments in capabilities and capacity around the world; and, while others are trying to catch up, we have clean-sheet, next-generation products in advanced development that will blow people away.” Farley said that Ford now expects to reach a 600,000-unit EV production run rate during 2024 and will maintain flexibility, balancing growth and profitability, on the way to attaining a two million run rate.

It will be interesting to follow Ford as they continue to strive for their 2 million EV run rate. The company hasn’t given a target date for that number, so continued quarterly growth in EV production will be key.
