Germany, Audi tried to break the lead in level 3 automatic driving. The high-end sedan "A8" launched by Audi in 2017 is "the world's first level 3 compatible" (according to Audi) but it has not been realized yet.
The biggest difficulty of level 3 is that the driving authority may transfer from the system to a person.
This makes it a question of who is responsible for the accident.
The car OEM is responsible for the accident during level 3 autonomous driving, but level 2 is "driving assistance" and the driver is responsible for the accident.

Thanks to a recently published patent application by the all-electric carmaker, more details about how such a system would work are now available.

The patent application, titled “Occupant Awareness Monitoring for Autonomous Vehicles,” was published on July 25, 2019, under serial number US 2019/0225228. It describes a multi-part system wherein driver activity is interpreted through synced wireless devices either on a smartphone or directly with the vehicle itself. If a driver’s awareness is needed and determined not to be available, the vehicle will take remedial action to ensure a high level of safety.

Longtime Tesla executive JB Straubel is leaving his post as chief technology officer after some 15 years, CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday evening. Straubel will transition to a “senior advisor” role, according to Musk, and is not fully leaving the company. The news comes as Tesla announced a $408 million loss for the second quarter of 2019.

“I’m not disappearing, and I just wanted to make sure that people understand that this was not some, you know, lack of confidence in the company, or the team, or anything like that,” Straubel said on the call.
