The design of Tesla’s Autopilot driver-assist technology was a factor in a high-profile crash in California last year, federal investigators said Wednesday. The conclusions underscore a growing body of research suggesting automakers need to do more to make sure these systems are used safely.
The NTSB conclusions about Autopilot track with the latest research and Consumer Reports’ testing of advanced driving assistance features, said Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at CR. He said that the cited causes of the crash demonstrate the need for automakers to improve how well the systems monitor driver attention.

Systems such as GM’s Super Cruise use cameras to make sure the driver is looking at the road. If the driver isn’t engaged, the car delivers an escalating series of warnings before the car pulls itself over. Super Cruise was the highest-rated of four advanced driver-assist systems CR tested last year. In contrast, Autopilot’s hand-on-the-wheel sensors don’t detect whether a driver is actually looking at the road.

“The main flaw in Tesla’s system is that checking to see if a driver’s hand is on the wheel isn’t sufficient,” Fisher said. “It’s about doing enough to make sure the driver is engaged.”

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that a Tesla Model S that hit the back of a fire truck was in Autopilot mode and the driver was not holding the steering wheel when it hit the parked vehicle.
The collision is one of several the NTSB is investigating involving the California-based EV maker’s Autopilot system, which is a semi-autonomous driving technology. In this instance, the 2014 Model S hit the truck in Culver City, California, at about 30 mph.
The board plans to release a report on the cause of the crash on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

We was A$110 and 4p, then went to 13p on same T/O and then diluted about 50%. This was without much, if any value on fleet and certainly no value on Aviation.
If we hit A$1.2 Billion on Auto thats about $800 million US $ so considering Mobileye sold at about Turnover A$ 600 Million for $15.3 US Billion I would hope we about 5-15 x the 20p quoted :)

3 years old but not really watching the driver, just tels you to get a coffee. I do wonder how many drivers end up sitting in a mangled mess, waiting to be cut free, while the cars telling you to get a coffee?
