Hopefully will be by 2023?
GM’s new vehicle digital architecture, which will be first deployed on the 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan, is designed to handle vast amounts of data that connected cars will generate as vehicles become more autonomous.
In fact, the new architecture can process 4.5 terabytes of data per hour, which equates to about 1 million pop songs. That may seem excessive but will soon become essential as cars exchange more and more data with various in-vehicle and on-road sensors and information sources such as video, lidar and traffic and safety updates from road authorities.
The platform, which will come as standard globally on most vehicles within GM’s line-up by 2023, will also enable smartphone-like software updates via mobile networks through which can remotely upgrade the car, from boosting fuel economy to fixing any bugs.
Such innovations are great for the consumer and also represent a smart move by GM—a report by Strategy& forecasts global connected car revenues will reach $155.9 billion in 2022, with auto industry profits shifting from hardware to software and from products to services.
