DETROIT — General Motors and Honda are moving toward an alliance in North America to share vehicle development and technology costs as the industry moves toward electric and autonomous vehicles.

The nonbinding memorandum of understanding was announced Thursday, and the companies say they plan to share vehicle underpinnings as well as engines and transmissions.

It’s another sign of increasing consolidation in the automotive business as companies face huge capital outlays to develop current products as well battery-powered and self-driving vehicles.

The Level 3 Revolution

With the ALKS regulation coming into force in the near future, Audi will most likely bring the TJP feature back to the A8, and possibly in its top-of-the-line models like A7, A6, Q8 and. Q7. Along with Audi, premium OEMs like Mercedes-Benz (DRIVE PILOT) and BMW (Personal CoPilot Systems) are likely to introduce Level 3 features in Europe, while Lexus is poised to launch its Level 3 feature – Highway Teammate – first in Japan, followed by other regions based on regulatory compliance requirements. Popular and mass-market OEMs like Nissan, Ford, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Toyota are expected to introduce Level 3 features by 2022-2023.

Seeing Machines (AIM: SEE) has today announced that it has won a contract with a premium German auto manufacturer in conjunction with a major Tier 1 auto manufacturer.

This is a further striking endorsement of its Fovio Driver Monitoring technology, which is already in the new Cadillac CT6’s Supercruise feature – the car was launched by General Motors this autumn in the US.

The awarded models are scheduled for mass production in 2020. My own guess is the manufacture is probably Mercedes. If it is, the tech is likely to debut in its top of the range S series, which is scheduled for a relaunch in 2020.

few weeks ago, Ford revealed the pricing and trim levels for much of the 2021 Ford F-150 lineup. Now, an important question has been answered. How much will Ford's new Active Driver Assist hands-free technology cost? The answer: $995 on most trim levels. There are some exceptions though.

Ford sells the technology as part of the Ford CoPilot360 Active 2.0 Prep Package. On the base model F-150 XL, the package is not available but a downgraded version without the Active Driver Assist component (Ford CoPoilot360 2.0) is, for $695. It comes with the following technologies:

Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (includes Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning, Dynamic Brake Support)
BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert

Although some Escalades have already been manufactured at the Arlington production plant in Texas, these examples are reserved for testing, demonstration, and training duties. Production of the first customer-bound Escalades is slated to begin in late Q3 and possibly Q4, indicating that we could see the first units roll off the production line sometime in September.

Models fitted with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel powertrain - a first for the Escalade model line - or those with the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver aid won't be the first to go into production, so it's worth noting for customers who have ticked one or both of these boxes.

Chevrolet recently unveiled a first look at its 2021 Bolt, which it’s dubbing an "EUV," or electric utility vehicle. This larger version of the current EV gets a longer wheelbase and more interior room.

It will also be the automaker’s first vehicle with their Super Cruise platform.

Is Fatigue Identification Software Ready for Implementation? Caterpillar Thinks So.

The use of heavy equipment represents a serious risk when fatigue is part of the equation.

That’s why Caterpillar, manufacturer of much of America’s construction equipment — loaders, lifters, and haulers —decided to implement a facial fatigue detection solution that would help eliminate fatigue-related accidents.

Caterpillar vehicles — some of which are large enough to boast tires more than 12 feet tall — are often used at mining operations, which generally run 24-hours a day and require many employees to work overnight, when the risk of fatigue is greatest.

Using small cameras placed on the dash of their larger vehicles, Caterpillar introduced a fatigue detection system that scans for predetermined fatigue flags like lowered head position and drooping eyelids.

When the system detects a sign of fatigue in the vehicle operator, Caterpillar’s central fatigue center is notified, along with the site supervisor and the driver. At this point, the manager can direct the operator to take a sleep break, preventing any possible vehicle incidents stemming from loss of alertness.

Caterpillar implemented their camera-based driver fatigue detection system in conjunction with robust fatigue monitoring and data tracking software at a major mining operation in Africa. The resulting cost savings from reduced fatigue-related accidents amounted to over $2.4 million.

With so many businesses now searching for ways to curb fatigue, especially in high-risk industries such as mining, manufacturing and transportation, it’s no wonder that so many different fatigue management technologies have surfaced in recent years. Though the technology is relatively young, it’s already being adopted by major enterprises in these sectors and beyond, and delivering positive results.

It’s only a matter of time before these solutions become standard procedure in workplaces everywhere.
