Ford will make most Mach-Es capable of using its Active Driver Assist. Owners will just need to accept (and pay for) an over-the-air upgrade later this year.

Ford's previously announced Active Driver Assist hands-free driving feature will be on most of the Mustang Mach-E EVs being built, part of the automaker's Co-Pilot360 technology.
The cars will be assembled with the Active Driver Assist Prep Kit on board, ready for an over-the-air upgrade when it's available later this year, although owners must pay a $600 activation fee.
The feature will be similar to GM's Super Cruise in that it will work only on a limited set of divided highways—for now, about 100,000 miles' worth in North America, only half of what GM's system offers.

Autopilot
A technology the Mach-E didn’t attempt to match on the Model Y was its autopilot driver-assist system. It instead took a page from GM’s playbook.

GM’s Super Cruise driver-assist system uses facial recognition to determine whether drivers are or aren’t paying attention. The monitoring also makes it so drivers don’t have to “check-in” by touching the steering wheel like in Tesla vehicles.

The monitoring system lowers the risk of the feature being abused. Some Tesla drivers have figured out workarounds to “check-in,” allowing them to be less attentive or even leave the driver seat and move into other areas of their vehicle.

Ford’s Mach-E and other vehicles are expected to feature a similar facial recognition system to GM’s starting later this year. Both Ford and GM systems can only be used on pre-mapped highway roadways.

Tesla’s system can be used on highways and city streets. It also does not utilize pre-mapped roadways, instead relying on a redundant system of onboard cameras, radars and other sensors to drive the vehicle when engaged.

The National Transportation Safety Board on Friday called for stronger federal requirements for the design and use of automated driving systems on public roads in the U.S., and it’s citing Tesla’s practices and system design as an example of why this is needed.

The investigation raises questions regarding the safety of Tesla's autopilot driving software and possible changes that need to be made to the function.

Auto analyst John McElroy says one feature Telsas are missing is a monitoring system for the driver.

"The big thing that they've got a problem with is there's not a system that monitors the driver," McElroy said. "There is what they call a torque system on the steering wheel so they can tell if the driver's hands are on the wheel or not, but that doesn't really show if they're paying attention."

McElroy says Cadillac has a similar system called supercruise, but that system has a camera that looks at the driver to see if they're paying attention.

The NTSB also calls for NHTSA to require driver-monitoring systems to ensure drivers are paying attention to the road while driver-assistance systems are active.

"Because driver attention is an integral component of lower-level automation systems, a driver-monitoring system must be able to assess whether and to what degree the driver is performing the role of automation supervisor," NTSB argued. "No minimum performance standards exist for the appropriate timing of alerts, the mtype of alert, or the use of redundant monitoring sensors to ensure driver engagement."

The least we deserve after staying with the company through the lean years.

Honda would design the pair, both the exterior and interior, and “the platform will be engineered to support Honda’s driving character” it was promised at the time. The National Transport Commission, in Australia, has just released the results of a world-first study into heavy vehicle driver fatigue. The study spanned over two years used alertness monitoring technology to monitor and evaluate the impact of work shifts on driver alertness. The analysis involved assessing start times, consecutive shifts, length of shift, rotation and rest breaks to see how each of these impacted driver fatigue levels.

This world-first study has identified scientific links between drowsiness/alertness and specific working shifts. Even though the study has focused on heavy vehicle drivers the science and evidence can be applied to other industries that involves long and differentiating shift patterns, such as rail.

Rail requires much of its work and improvement schemes to be undertaken at night and weekends which in turn results in a vast majority of the industry working varying shift patterns. The link between rail and this study is the potential commuting activity undertaken after a rail worker has finished their shift.

With the UK rail industry focusing heavily on the fatigue management of its workforce this study offers some key insights into the links between shift work and fatigue, for example the study found that drivers are at a greater risk of drowsiness when they have completed consecutive night shifts, have limited breaks between shifts and transferring between morning and evening shifts. In addition, it also found that the physical effects of fatigue on those driving after long amounts of time at night had:

Slow eye and eyelid movement
Longer blink duration
Prolonged eye closure
All of which can be potential harmful, if not deadly, when commuting on UK roads after working long night shifts on the UK rail tracks.

Managing fatigue is something the UK rail industry takes seriously, with other industries now starting to follow. The use of fatigue management systems will help the industry better plan and manage the on-set of fatigue and ensure we act responsibly as an industry leading sector.

Autonomous driving tech will also be incorporated into the Grand Wagoneer with the hands-on Level 2 Active Driving Assist feature; Jeep plans to upgrade that later to a hands-free version. As of now, Jeep says that hands-free Active Driving Assist will be available on “approved roadways,” which hints at a system more akin to GM’s Super Cruise than Tesla’s Autopilot.

In official correspondence with California’s Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla lawyers recently admitted the $10,000 option that Tesla sells as Full Self-Driving Capability is not, in fact, capable of full self-driving. “Currently neither Autopilot nor FSD Capability is an autonomous system,” Tesla attorney Eric Williams said in a Dec. 28 letter to the DMV, although that could change, he added.
