Waymo: In 2009, Google secretly launched its Self-Driving Car Project. It used a modified Toyota Prius with its driverless technology and got a license to turn it on Nevada state’s streets. In 2015, they achieved the world’s first fully self-driving car trip on public roads, in a car without a steering wheel gas or brake pedal. Google renamed it as Waymo in December 2016. Waymo used Phoenix, Arizona, as the site for testing Waymo One, a self-driving taxi service. These tests all had a human backup driver in their vehicles as a safety precaution. Waymo has aligned with Jaguar to create the world’s first finest electric self-driving vehicle: The Jaguar I-PACE. In addition to the camera, LiDAR, and radar sensors, Waymo cars also use microphones to detect sirens from emergency vehicles for autonomous functionality.

OEM 1 [General Motors] — Supercruise will be rolled out to entire range of Cadillacs (some 350,000 cars by end 2021). Thereafter, I’d expect it to go into most of GMs 10m cars.
OEM 2 [Mercedes] — Programme is just for its flagship S Class saloon car, equivalent to 5% of the total cars produced.
OEM 3 [BMW] — stated minimum contract value of USS$25m. However, BMW sells 2.3m cars a year and Fovio chip will be rolled out across the entire group.
OEM 4 [Ford] — F-150 is a phenomenal earner for Ford and last year Adam Jonas, the famous Morgan Stanley analyst, stated the franchise could be worth more than Ford itself. It has been estimated that Ford will is planning to produce around 1m a year of these in the future. I expect Ford will also roll it out across other car models in due course. Note that Ford produced 6.6m cars in 2017.
OEM 5 [Byton] — relatively small volumes but I’d expect them to grow and other premium electric cars to put Fovio into their offerings.

Back in October CAT announced stuff but SEE not said anything. When that turns into news or a RNS we will get excited about that no doubt.
Caterpillar has joined forces with Seeing Machines to deliver a technology that can monitor driver fatigue and distraction in light vehicle applications.

The Guardian 2 system by Seeing Machines is a non-intrusive system that senses operator movements and analyses them for symptoms of fatigue or distraction.

Operators will be alerted by seat vibration and audio alarms when a microsleep or distraction event is detected.

This is identified via a driver-facing sensor and forward-facing camera, which measure the operator’s head position and eye closure without any input from the operator.

“The Guardian 2 system reduces the likelihood of safety incidents by alerting operators and keeping them focussed on the job at hand,” MineStar Detect products commercial manager Mindy Elsasser said.

More than one contract out there. 2018 then was talk of a rushed BDMS contract just before the Auto Awards so at least 2 companies. Maybe more, who knows.

SEE has never named anyone yet so hopefully the CEO on the phone clearing a SEE RNS or talks about it in his video call Weds.

The answers are the same. No one wishes to draw attention to the inconvenient fact that distraction, drowsiness and impairment can affect humans irrespective of whether they are driving vehicles or supervising test-level vehicle automation. Somewhat paradoxically, the development of driverless cars on public roads looks likely to depend on driver monitoring technology for many years, and possibly decades, to come.

The clear AV technology leader is using the same company which developed DMS for Cadillac Super Cruise in the 2018 CT6 and the 2021 Escalade. But why doesn’t Waymo discuss this subject openly? What is the DMS adoption at other AV developers testing on public roads? Why doesn’t the California DMV require all AV testing permit holders to adopt DMS?

Tesla has recently found itself in the news again, but not for a particularly good reason. Like many vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y come equipped with a driver monitoring system designed to ensure drivers are paying attention to the road, even when the vehicle’s Autopilot or self-driving feature is enabled. However, unlike similar systems like Ford Active Drive Assist, Tesla vehicles record and transmit video footage of both drivers and passengers via an onboard camera.

On the flipside, “closed-loop” driver monitoring systems like Ford Active Drive Assist and General Motors Super Cruise do not record, save, or transmit data or video. In place of cameras, these systems use infrared technology to monitor the driver’s eye movements and head position.

As it turns out, making the final leap to full autonomy — self-driving on any road at any time — remains tantalizingly out of reach both for engineers and safety regulators. And despite all the attention such vehicles have drawn, Americans aren’t exactly clamoring for self-driving cars: The latest AAA annual survey on automated vehicles found that just 14% of drivers would trust riding in a self-driving car, about the same as 2020.

Wonder what system?

A Melbourne-based fleet and long established buyer of North American trucks has taken delivery of four new Mercedes-Benz Actros 2653s.

F Vitale and Sons uses fatigue-monitoring cameras that alert the driver and the operations team of any fatigue events in order to reduce risk in all its trucks.

This system often registered fatigue warnings in the American-style trucks, but not one has been detected in the Actros models operated by the same drivers on the same routes.

F Vitale and Sons Transport also delivers for the family’s bespoke plaster component manufacturing business.

“We had not expected this when we ordered the Actros, but given our focus on safety at F Vitale and Sons, it is invaluable,” Vitale said.

“It is clear evidence that the Actros is way ahead in terms of reducing fatigue.”

His drivers, some of whom were hesitant to start with given the smaller displacement of the Actros, now agree.
