Ford Motor Company enjoyed a successful April in terms of sales with its three newest products leading the way. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 PowerBoost spurred a 262 percent gain in electrified vehicle sales and a new all-time record while the ultra-cool Bronco Sport posted huge numbers to help record April retail SUV sales.

Ford Motor Company sold a total of 197,813 vehicles in April, up 64.8 percent year-over-year. Blue Oval brand sales increased 62.7 percent at 187,345 vehicles, and Lincoln sales were up 114.9 percent. At retail, Ford’s sales were up 57.1 percent from 2020. Ford also notes that its retail sales last month were up 24 percent from April 2019.

Tesla has activated its in-car camera to monitor drivers using Autopilot

Tesla has enabled the in-car camera in its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to monitor drivers when its Autopilot advanced driver assistance system is being used.

In a software update, Tesla indicated the “cabin camera above the rearview mirror can now detect and alert driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged.” Notably, Tesla has a closed loop system for the data, meaning imagery captured by the camera does not leave the car. The system cannot save of transit information unless data sharing is enabled, according to Tesla. The firmware update was cited by a number of Tesla owners, industry watchers and bloggers who are active on Twitter.

Tesla has faced criticism for not activating a driver monitoring system within the vehicle even as evidence mounted that owners were misusing the system. Owners have posted dozens of videos on YouTube and TikTok abusing the Autopilot system

Great that Super cruise going into No2 biggest seller.

Firstly, the Ford F-150 is not just the best-selling truck in the US, it’s the best-selling vehicle, full stop. According to Car and Driver, in 2020 it sold 787,422 units – 200,000 more than its closest rival, the Chevrolet Silverado (also a pickup). Interestingly, it's only second place globally, too. So, when a vehicle that sells such huge numbers goes electric – or at least, offers an electric version – it’s going to be a big thing.

Automotive biometrics market could receive US legislative boost

Regulatory change, expanding scope present opportunities
A profile of Seeing Machines by Proactive Investors reports comments from its CEO that it has experienced growth during the first of 2021, as the market conditions for assisted driving technology improve.

Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate could see the Department of Transportation research driver inattention and driver monitoring systems (DMSs) to consider mandating their inclusion in new vehicles within the next four years, the report notes.

Seeing Machines shares are trading at around £10.6 (approximately US$14.90), after trading at half that amount in late-2020.

The proposed legislation specifies the biometric capabilities that DMS should have, including detecting driver distraction and disengagement, and would also prompt research into automation complacency by drivers and the potential for misuse of driver-assistance systems, according to Input.

The legislation comes after the latest fatal crash of a Tesla in Texas reportedly involved a vehicle with no-one in the driver’s seat.

Innovation in the biometric driver monitoring space is also continuing to draw in more applications, as Moment AI has developed software to keep motorists with epilepsy safe. The software uses captures driver behavior and physical characteristics to predict the onset of a seizure before it occurs.
