Driver fatigue was a likely factor in 10 times more car crash deaths than federal statistics indicate, according to a new study — but when it comes to systemic solutions to address the problem, policymakers are asleep at the wheel.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently found that a stunning 17.6 percent of fatal crashes between 2017 and 2021 almost certainly involved a tired driver, based on an advanced statistical analysis of the 41 percent of motorists' whose fatigue status was marked "unknown" in official crash reports. And in many cases, that data was missing for a simple reason: no one survived to witness who was awake and who wasn't.
"Unfortunately, just because of the types of crashes drowsy driving tends to be implicated in, we often don’t have a driver we can interview," said William Horrey, technical director at the Foundation. "And as an extension of that, many times whoever is doing the investigation might not know the important cues and indicators that might indicate that drowsy driving was a factor; the reporting form doesn’t even give them tools they need to make that assessment."

Van Hool has partnered with Mobileye to integrate advanced safety features into the T series. The Shield+ range includes components such as Turning Assist, which alerts drivers to the presence of road users when making turns, and Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW), which detects pedestrians in front of the vehicle and warns the driver. The Speed Limitation Indication recognizes speed limit signs and displays them on the dashboard, giving those high evidence. The Highway Monitoring Warning helps maintain a safe distance from preceding vehicles, and finally Turn Signal Reminder ensures that drivers are aware of their active turn signals. Furthermore, the Driver Drowsiness Indication system monitors driver fatigue, providing audible and visual alarms when necessary.

Lots of talk recently about dual optical path #driver #monitoring #DMS and cabin monitoring #CMS. It is important to understand this trend is not new, and the first vehicle to reach start of production #SOP in Europe with a dual optical path DMS+CMS configuration was the BMW Group #iX, back in 2021.
BMW has begun to expand DMS+CMS installation beyond the iX. Shown below is the 2025 MINI #Cooper #EV, with a DMS located just above the steering column and sited where the instrument cluster would traditionally be, and a CMS integrated into the overhead console #OHC. In BMW/MINI models, the DMS is judged to be supplied by Seeing Machines and the CMS by Xperi Inc. #DTSAutosense, now part of Tobii. Further research confirms the overall market leader for #automotive DMS is Seeing Machines, and for CMS is DTS Autosense (Tobii).
The need for two systems reflects two sets of protocol tests: a DMS to monitor the driver for #distraction, #drowsiness, and sudden sickness; and a CMS to monitor for seatbelt recognition #SBR and child presence detection #CPD. In future the CMS feature set may expand to include other convenience features such as driver and passenger ID, pet detection, and object detection.
Irrespective of the inevitable PR positioning already underway about "interior sensing," the long-term trend is towards single optical path DMS+CMS, or in other words to perform driver and cabin monitoring from a single #CMOS image sensor.
The challenge is where to site the single sensor: DMS is optimal from around the steering column and instrument cluster; CMS is optimal from the OHC. The problem is that each location for one severely compromises the performance of the other.
A solution that is emerging is to site the single sensor in (or on) the rear-view mirror (RVM). But that is technically very challenging, for example the mirror moves, there is an existing trend to full display mirrors (FDM), and thermal management in a confined space is a major issue. So locating a 940nm IR optical path with image processor inside the mirror and running algorithms that can meet the performance requirements for both DMS and CMS is a significant engineering problem.
Commercial factors also come into play. The RVM market is dominated by Gentex Corporation and Magna International. Gentex has proprietary DMS/CMS #algorithms from its purchase of Guardian Optical, and Magna is partnered with Seeing Machines.
JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) will introduce hands-free, eyes-on driving in 2025 with the launch of the first model on the new electric EMA platform, understood to be the replacement for the Range Rover Velar.
Hands-free, eyes-on capability, known in the industry as level two-plus, is the final step towards autonomous driving, where the car fully takes over. Currently only the Ford Mustang Mach-E offers level two-plus in the UK, although BMW is poised to roll out the feature on new models such as the i5.
The capability for greater autonomy comes with JLR’s adoption of US tech specialist Nvidia’s Drive chip and software combination. The new Range Rover model, to be built in Halewood near Liverpool, is the first to use the new tech, a spokesperson told Autocar. They did not, however, confirm that this model is the Velar.

Car makers believe hands-free capability will become increasingly popular among customers, with many willing to pay monthly for the convenience. Ford charges £17.99 a month for BlueCruise level two-plus in the Mach-E, while BMW charges from £55 to download the hands-on upgrade Driving Assistant Plus.
JLR has also committed to offering level-three hands-off, eyes-off technology in the future. Tom Stringer, product strategy director, said: “I think for the modern luxury customer, level three will be a really important part.” He added that it is a “possibility” by the end of the decade.

Another model coming maybe?
The teched-up mule is equally mysterious. Keep in mind that Ford could be using this prototype as a testbed for just about anything (including projects completely unrelated to the Maverick itself), but considering how robustly this prototype has been up-fitted with various electronic gizmos, two things seem plausible. One is that this is a mule for Blue Cruise. Ford already packages Blue Cruise in CUVs built on this platform, so its inclusion on Maverick is not out of the question, however, even with a price tag approaching $40,000 loaded up, the little pickup seems an unlikely candidate for premium semi-self-driving tech.

Not long now :)
Starting July 7, 2024, every new car model manufactured in Europe is required to include a system capable of directly detecting drivers' distraction and drowsiness levels. This mandate comes under the European regulation known as "GSR2" ("General Safety Regulation 2").
Mandatory in Europe
This move is detailed in the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2590, established by the European Commission on July 13, 2023. According to the regulation, the system must alert drivers if their eyes deviate from the road for more than 3.5 seconds at speeds above 50km/h, and for more than 6 seconds when traveling between 20 and 50km/h.
This requirement applies regardless of the time of day, and the system must be effective even if the driver is wearing accessories such as caps, sunglasses, or false eyelashes.
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) are not entirely new to the automotive industry, with certain vehicles having incorporated them since July 2022.
Beyond Safety: The Future of Driver Monitoring
Like the intelligent speed limiters which will also arrive this summer, this time on all new cars, this regulation is part of the ambition of zero deaths by 2050 on the roads of the European Union. According to French road safety, the first signs of drowsiness increase the risk of having an accident by 3 or 4.
In the summer of 2026, all new cars sold in Europe will have to carry these cameras.
In addition to promoting safety, the widespread adoption of these systems opens the door to innovative applications aimed at enhancing driver comfort.
"This type of system is capable of providing other information or detecting other elements such as the driver's emotions to offer music, adjust the interior ambiance, or to combine this information with the DMS. For example, depending on where the driver is looking, we can adjust the brightness of the screens to provide greater comfort or highlight important information," Ayla Vanden Driessche considers.

Driver safety remains a top priority for fleets, with half of businesses currently monitoring driver behaviour and almost a third (30%) planning on investing in driver technology this year, new research suggests.
The 2024 Telematics Survey (TS24), an annual survey from Teletrac Navman, sheds light on the industry’s latest trends and challenges for fleets.
Taking data from more than 500 global fleet businesses, the annual report focuses on three key areas: sustainability, safety, and efficiency.
More than two thirds of TS24 respondents (73%) have seen fewer accidents on the job since adopting telematics solutions, and 73% are actively rewarding drivers for better performance.
TS24 also found 71% of respondents have seen improved driver performance through driver rewards programmes.
Incentivising drivers has become crucial for retention, especially in the face of economic challenges such as Brexit and the cost-of-living crisis. This data also aligns with the industry's focus on driver well-being and a rising interest in recognition and rewards programmes to retain and support drivers.
“This in turn has led to an even higher emphasis on safety, prompting operators to prioritise safe processes and behaviour to manage costs effectively as well as look after staff wellbeing.”

The Indonesian air safety agency has called for better pilot fatigue monitoring mechanisms, after an investigation revealed that both pilots of a commercial aircraft had recently fallen asleep in-flight.
A pilot and co-pilot were simultaneously asleep for approximately 28 minutes during a Batik Air flight from South East Sulawesi to the capital Jakarta on January 25, a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said.

DETROIT, March 5th, 2024 - General Motors (GM), global automotive supplier Magna, and leading technology services and consulting company Wipro Limited, have teamed up to develop a B2B sales platform for buying and selling automotive software. The platform, called SDVerse, aims to revolutionize the automotive software sourcing and procurement process by providing a matchmaking platform for buyers and sellers of embedded automotive software.
Unlike the traditional captive software development approach, SDVerse focuses on connecting automotive software buyers and sellers through a transparent and efficient digital platform. Sellers can list their software’s features and attributes, while buyers can easily search and explore the available software products through a comprehensive catalogue.
Sales and purchases can be connected directly through the platform, offering a seamless experience for all participants. SDVerse is currently in development and expected to feature hundreds of automotive software products, and participants from across the automotive value chain are invited to join. In addition to the founding members, an exclusive “Launch Partner” group is already in place led Ampere*, FEV, Forvia, HL Mando, NXP Semiconductors, TTTech Auto, and Valeo.
Prashant Gulati has been named CEO of SDVerse effective March 5th, 2024. Prashant has more than two decades of experience launching and leading automotive organizations and is a thought leader in software technology, maximizing the potential of emerging technologies, such as AI, in the automotive industry.
“The market for automotive software is expected to nearly double this decade, potentially outpacing the growth of software development talent pools” said Harmeet Chauhan, Global Head Wipro Engineering Edge, Wipro Limited. “The current paradigm for software sourcing will likely not be able to overcome this growing gap without sacrificing both profitability and the auto industry’s aspirations for software defined vehicles. SDVerse addresses these pain points, offering a wide range of benefits across the industry.”
“Automotive grade software development is rapidly transforming, and we all need to ask ourselves how we get customers really unique differentiating features faster. Part of that is identifying the common underlying code that can be shared in the name of higher quality and lower costs for our end customers,” said Dan Nicholson, Vice President, Strategic Technology Initiatives, General Motors. “This first-ever software marketplace creates an independent, industry-driven one-stop-shop for embedded systems software, significantly expanding access to new innovations, helping to drive down cost, and allowing companies like GM to implement critical software more quickly.”

Come try out the technology for real on the Cubo stand next week at #CVShow23.
Driver distraction is fast becoming the biggest safety problem for fleets, says RED Corporate Driver Training, mainly because of the huge expansion of digital functions in infotainment screens and vehicle cabins.
While phones, personal issues, other motorists and passengers have always been a factor in reduced driving focus, the trend for increasing numbers of entertainment and driving options to appear on screens and dials – to the point where some vehicles have almost no physical buttons at all – has tipped many drivers over the edge into dangerous levels of distraction.
Consequently, RED agrees with the announcement from Euro NCAP that from 2026 it will only start awarding five stars for safety to vehicles that have physical buttons for certain key operations.
RED believes that without more awareness of the issue, the problem of digital distraction is going to get worse, not better, and has published a free to download RED Advisory Paper on how to combat the problem.

RED CEO Seb Goldin
“A driver who is scrolling through multiple sub menus on a screen to operate their vehicle’s systems is almost certainly not going to classify themselves as distracted. But almost certainly, they are. As high profile recent court cases involving distraction and fatal road accidents have shown, there can be tragic consequences for seemingly innocuous actions undertaken by drivers all the time,” says RED Corporate Driver Training Chief Executive Officer Seb Goldin.
“Their eyes are off the road and mental effort is going into the act of selecting, toggling, scrolling and clicking. Hundreds of metres of driving can have taken place for what are justified actions in the mind of the driver. Yet it is incredibly dangerous.”

Indonesia’s transport ministry will launch an investigation after two Batik Air pilots fell asleep during a recent flight, according to state news agency Antara, citing the ministry’s civil aviation director-general M Kristi Endah Murni.
According to a preliminary report released Saturday by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), both the pilot and co-pilot fell asleep simultaneously for 28 minutes during a flight from Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi province to the capital Jakarta on January 25, causing navigational errors as “the aircraft was not in the correct flight path.”
None on board - including 153 passengers and four flight attendants - were injured during the flight, and there was no damage to the aircraft, the KNKT preliminary report said.

BMW Group's electric vehicles are made on the same assembly line as gasoline cars and look similar from the outside. That approach, using the same basic body for electric, hybrid, gasoline and diesel cars, has been viewed as an awkward and inefficient compromise some established carmakers have deployed as they struggle to compete with Tesla and emerging Chinese automakers that produce cars designed solely for battery power.
But confounding the pundits, BMW’s strategy has paid off. The company sold 376,000 electric vehicles last year, including some under its Mini brand, a 75% increase from the previous year. In the luxury segment, BMW was second only to Tesla, which remained dominant with 1.8 million cars. Electric vehicles accounted for 15% of BMW sales in 2023, up from 9% the previous year.
The company’s growth comes as sales of electric vehicles have risen at a slower pace overall around the world. What is even more surprising is that BMW, unlike General Motors or Ford Motor Company, made a profit on the electric vehicles it sold.
Wonder what system they picked?

GM resumes sales, cuts price of Chevy Blazer EV after software issue
GM had software issues so only starting making again on a few models.
GM said it would cut the price of the Blazer by about $5,600 to $6,500 based on the trim level. The automaker also said the Blazer has regained eligibility for a U.S. $7,500 EV tax credit after new battery sourcing rules from the U.S. Treasury on Jan. 1 made many EVs ineligible.
The Blazer price cuts and restored tax credit bring the effective price for qualified buyers down to $42,695 from the original $56,715 for the lowest-priced model. Other automakers, including Ford Motor, have cut prices of EVs in recent months.
Several EVs have regained eligibility for tax credits since January including the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen ID.4, Honda Prologue and Cadillac Lyriq.
Separately, GM on Feb. 26 resumed sales of its 2024 model year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size trucks after briefly halting them to address intermittent software quality issues.
Hopefully VW will start adding in 1st or 2nd Qtr with the Magna mirror.
Then we have the Honda Acura with deliveries starting anytime now.
