This share IS cheap on metrics, particularly relative to its peers.

There comes a time when cheap becomes a value trap.

I agree with most of this. I wonder if the company was rebuffed when trying to find a CEO, hence going for MA.

The last time the company had a serious (if deeply flawed) strategy to take the business forward, it was 2020.

Then when Looney left it was - a bit of non-zero, a bit of O&G - and now it is, well, drift.

They cant seriously want to keep Castrol. The work will have been done to operationally separate it from the rest of the business, so the rest is just about price.

The only compelling buy case at the moment is that it is a sitting duck for a takeover (there is no leader) and it has a good dividend yield. The latter can be wiped out in a day of trading so that is not a slam-dunk.

HE should have gone when the chairman went.

He was as embedded in the strategy.

The company needs to be broken up or sold.

Thing is - why would the lady join if that was the strategy?

The speed of departure implies there was little confidence in direction.

The statement says a lot:

"Progress has been made in recent years, but increased rigor and diligence are required to make the necessary transformative changes to maximise value for our shareholders."

Sounds like he thought the company can go it alone with a bit of tweaking.

There will be non-competes but, presumably, the man will gradually bring some additional management mandates.

It is a vote of confidence from a senior person in the industry.

It has to be seen as concerning. They are mainly a travel business so the business is very predictable.

Why would they have stock that needed to be promoted or forward sold?

The acquisition of the remainder of the Bullring makes some sense.

It seems odd they have had the buyback programme before. Would think they would knew the stake could have been up for sale.

The bid is less than the NAV and they can rationalise some of the assets.

They are a good operator and can get synergies that Blackstone can't achieve.

I am fed up with all these takeunders (and yes - I meant to spell it like that) are affecting the FTSE 250.

British companies should be investing instead of letting financial companies take the value.

BP doesnt have the credibility to manager its own portfolio - hence the takeover/breakup speculation.

Putting two 'cheap' companies together does not make a super-bargain - it is two drunks propping themselves up at the bar.

He is plainly an experienced man, being a CFO.

It is not exactly the appointment of a business that want to drive forward, it it?

Finance people dont drive businesses forward.

It is a steady-as-she-goes appointment.

I would be very wary of using the word 'never'.

Would you take a nil-premium merger with a company that has delivered value over the last 5/10 years and you have confidence in them to deliver in the future.

OR

Stay with the current management that have delivered little/nothing and you don't think will do in the future.

It is plain the market does not have confidence in BP.

And there have been PLENTY of nil-premium mergers over the years - voted for by the shareholders.

This has some merit but with a stock like BP, the dividend return can be wiped out in a day.

Lets face it - there is no chance this business is in the same state in 3 years time.

It will be taken over or dismembered on a sum of the parts basis.

The credibility of the board is low.

Even with the speculation, the price has underperform Shell in the last 6 months.

Btw - we could also get a nil-premium merger, if only to get ahold of better management via the acquiror.

I am looking to buy on a dip of 5% or so. It is worth playing from the corporate action angle but NOT IMHO on the 'fundementals'. The thing is a value trap.

I had this for a few years.

It was a dog for me. Bought over 60p on average and sold eventually, last year I think, for less than 20p.

The takeover from a competitor never came. The sales grew but never enough to make consistent pre-tax profits.

It was promise promise promise.

And with it all - the CEO kept getting rewarded.

Was a good lesson to not hang on in there.

(I have an aversion to AIM ever since because the governance just isnt there).

This question is in relation to what news/development?

I have sold out of this today hoping to buy back lower.

Just my observation, but seems to be a willingness to sell into strength.

My thesis is that BP will be taken over, but, for the moment I will try to take advantage of volatility.

The selling, I presume, is because of the majors, BP’s holders must have the weakest hands. They have been let down so often.

There is nothing wrong with trading around a position you have. From one day to the next BP can be plus or minus 3%.

The way things are, is difficult to see much M&A with the macro background as it is. We need a degree of stability or that.
