Although not the main focus, there is also a possibility of discovering alluvial/kimberlite diamonds.
The region hosts Archean aged rock which is the planet's oldest form of rock that has been layered upon over the planet's history. Why this is important for diamonds is due to the fact that carbon is only naturally present on the surface as its density is lower than other elements. As for example, when continental subsision occurs, surface carbon is dragged down to unnatural depths where heat and pressure crystalise the carbon, forming diamonds.
Every non alluvial diamond occurance across the planet has occured only in Archean rock......and there are Cratons all over Australia, most notably, the Yilgarn Crayon in western Australia. Who knows, we could be on to something of an unimaginable scale! .....but I would also settle for gold!
