Putin Open to Ukraine Ceasefire Under Strict Conditions
Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly open to negotiating a Ukraine ceasefire deal with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, but insists on Kyiv abandoning its NATO ambitions and making no major territorial concessions, according to Kremlin insiders.
Moscow controls about 18% of Ukraine, including Crimea and significant portions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. While willing to freeze the conflict along current front lines, Russia may negotiate the precise boundaries in these areas but demands Kyiv recognize its control over them.
Russia opposes Ukraine joining NATO but is open to discussing security guarantees and potentially limiting Ukraine’s military size. However, hardliners within Moscow could push for tougher demands, especially after recent escalations like Ukraine’s use of U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles.
Putin seeks a deal that reflects current territorial realities, framing the war as a necessary response to Western interference. While Trump has signaled willingness to mediate, details of his proposed approach remain unclear. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky maintains that all Russian forces must leave Ukrainian territory, a goal seen as highly ambitious by Western military experts.
The path to peace appears fraught, with sources warning that a grand settlement addressing both nations’ security concerns will be extremely difficult to achieve.
