The World Heritage Center acknowledges with thanks receipt of your message concerning the mixed natural-cultural World Heritage site 'Laponian Area'. The World Heritage Center is fully aware of the interest of the different stakeholders in the developments related to the planned Kallak mine project.
The state of conservation of the property is being monitored closely with the relevant authorities of the Kingdom of Sweden, the World Heritage Center and the Advisory Bodies (IUCN, ICOMOS) to the World Heritage Convention in accordance with the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
In this respect, please note that the information and documentation related to the planned Kallak mine project received from the State Party is currently being reviewed by the Advisory Bodies in an in-depth assessment.The Technical Review is expected to be completed soon and will be transmitted to the Swedish authorities.
By signing the World Heritage Convention, each State Party recognizes the duty of ensuring the identification, protection, conservation, presentation and transmission to future generations of the cultural and natural heritage situated on its territory. Technical reviews serve to provide recommendations to States Parties with regard to the preservation of the Outstanding Universal Value of World Heritage properties, its cultural and natural values ??and its integrity and authenticity.
