Some specialist and more independently regulated funds do invest on AIM, HOWEVER many mainstream institutional investors avoid it due to - as mentioned - lighter regulatory and governance requirements as well as more limited liquidity. Means AIM registers are often PI/nominee-dominated. Drachs stands out as a specialist holder obviously - but there's evidence of broader participation from any other large, well-known institutional investors, which is NOT unusual for AIM listed cos.
In short - not suggesting there are no IIs on AIM, but participation is far lower than it would be on the main market. MTL reflects this massively
