Bonneville ref 08.57 post you may be a bit premature. we do not yet know what Rothchilds will say when they finish their review. I can forsee one solution where shareholders can avoid being wipeout it depends on how receptive the new management is in listening to proposals.

I have had frequent discussions with the Department for Business and Trade, across government, trade unions and with the Deputy First Minister of Scotland, to support activity at Harland and Wolff sites across the United Kingdom. This country has a long and proud history of shipbuilding and fabrication, and I am confident that this Government is taking appropriate steps to support the sector in Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government and the company itself. Can I refer the Hon Gentlemen to the market update from the company dated Friday 19 July, and the Written Ministerial Statement presented to the House on Monday 22 July for more information.

I met with the wonderful Mark Lawther, GM of Appledore shipyard, and his hugely experienced team, and as they showed me around I absolutely saw what others (Dan Start, Chris Fuller) have been telling me for a while – that this area of North Devon and Torridge is ideally positioned, with existing and proposed developments, to provide a stellar O&M service to developers.

I note that it says ' I am working closely with my colleagues the Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland and Scotland, and Ministers are also engaging with the leaders of the Northern Ireland Executive and Scottish Government, alongside the local Members of Parliament, to support a positive outcome for all affected sites across the UK. .' I think that while the DBT are not puttng any money in the devolved adminsitrations might be willing to provide funding.

LSE03 ref 09.45 post since Friday there has been a lot of press touting him as a possible buyer. He only wants to buy Belfast. i am not sure that he would get approval from HMG. We have 3-4 hours to wait to see the government statement I will wait to see it before commenting further.

Monty888 ref 04.10 post This is not 1999 the economic and political situation is different so I am not sure that you will see administrators appointed. I think everyone is expecting the non core assets to be sold off. This may or may not include IM. Depending on what the true situation is with regards to actual and likely contracts it is possible that after the turnaround you will have a more focussed HARL capable of doing its part in relation to building the vessels the Navy needs. In this respect there is the MRSS contract which may be tendered next year and I would suggest being in a fit state to tender for that as part of a consortium should be one of the aims of the turnaround. There are other tenders that HARL may be able to bid for so I am not as pesstimistic as some especially as we no longer have JW in the picture.

Having checked the order paper as there are no Oral Questions today that means unless there are any urgent qiestions we can expect the statement at around 2.35pm. Technically it is down as a witten statement and the Secretary of State could just issue the statement and leave it at that. However in this case if he was to do that then you can expect a fuss being made by the Northern Ireland MPs.

Although the NI Court of Appeal have been asked to grant permission they are unlikely to as it would amount to a lower court telling a higher one to take an appeal. So it will go to a panel of three Justices to decide if Leave to Appeal should be granted. b) Expedites the appeal. If b is not done then any appeal is likely to be a year after leave is granted. If a is not done that is the end of the road as far as appeals are concerned and the Executive will need to make a fresh decision.
