RE: Petition for UK Parlament14 Mar 2022 20:06
Sent a mail to local mp don’t even think he read it nowhere does he reference concerns and questions raised.
“Thank you for your email. I agree more needs to be done. This is a fast-moving situation and I have been in contact with the Home Office who tell me that they are doing all possible to accommodate those impacted by these terrible events.
The UK is amongst the largest arms provider and have supplied at least ÂŁ400 million in aid to Ukraine so far but we need to do more.
In terms of humanitarian support, Ukraine initially requested that people stay close to the border, in the hope of returning home when possible. This is now more challenging and is why it was announced over the weekend that two migration schemes would be established -the Family route and a Sponsor route. The Sponsor route, as I understand, is being developed as we speak which will allow those in the UK to directly support Ukrainian nationals who are fleeing the conflict. I will continue to press for more information on this scheme.
As I have mentioned, I see this as a start but we need to do more - quickly. I am in regular touch with the Home Office, in particular relating to constituents who have a relationship with Ukraine.
The Government has applied sanctions to both the Russian Government and any supporting Oligarchs. The UK has seized, sanctioned or restricted sums that are amongst the highest value of other Western Nations. UK legislation has now allowed us to act is a swifter or even more comprehensive way. This is why Parliament is fast tracking changes to the law to give more powers to Ministers to act.
I agree that we need to go further than the law has permitted up until now.
Please be assured that I recognise the importance and priority. I raised the matter in the House yesterday, to draw further attention to the issues some are facing when applying for visas for the UK
To be clear, I have not received donations from Russian oligarchs. My friend and colleague is a British National and a Ukrainian – who has tragically lost family members as a result of this conflict. It is disappointing that political opponents are seeking to misreport the facts.
This is a time when we need to come together”
And send another email 10mins later
am writing to advise you that I am holding a public meeting to discuss the latest events
It will be an opportunity to consider the challenges and risks faced in Ukraine and across Europe, including the UK and NATO response. We will also consider how best to support Ukrainian families and I will share the latest information on the proposed methods of helping. Local residents with knowledge of supporting families from war torn parts of the world will be present to share their experiences.
The meeting is open to all residents of the ****** constituency and I should be grateful if you would kindly advise me if you are able to make it
