I have an Excel speadsheet of my annual expenses, an app showing my various bank accounts , investments etc, projections of my yearly expenditure and a team of two financial experts (well, me and hers indoors)…

When I go out for a meal, p**s up with friends in the village, book a holiday, plan for a family wedding, I know what my financial position is well in advance. Surely, the finance department of a FTSE 100 company, with all of their resources, can manage their projections better than me (and her indoors)?

No offence intended. Just an honest question from an interested forum colleague. Please don’t shoot the ‘messenger’ as it’s a genuine come back.

Your post in respect of market expectations and the legal and regulatory hurdles companies must adhere to was very informative. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to share your knowledge. If did leaving me scratching my head a little though in terms of the February 2025 company news around the 2024 results. These were stellar to say the least and resulted in an upward leap in share price that I think most people never thought rarely possible for a FTSE 100 company. In light of your post, would it not be reasonable for the company to have managed expectations earlier with a market update well in advance of publicising the performance/annual results update? Kind regards.

Hi Agile, (and apologies to all other RR forum colleagues uninterested but I simply wanted to help a poster out),

An adviser will explain all of the nuances of how annuities work vs drawdown. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Buying an annuity can be compared with renewing your car of house insurance: always good to shop around and compare. You’d be surpised at the difference offered between the highest and lowest on any given day.

Some things to consider when looking at annuities:

* Your health and likely/potential life expectancy (and that of your parents, siblings)

* Your current and previous occupations (because of the potential exposure to life-reducing factors)

* Whether you want a single life annuity (just you)

* The frequency that you want your pension paid e.g. paid annually or monthly (in advance, in arrears if optional)

* Whether you want your pension guaranteed for a specific period e.g. 5 or 10 years (paid for life thereafter)

* If you want to incorporate a surviving spouse’s pension on your death, and if so how much 50%, 60%, etc. of yours

* Whether you want a fixed level pension or one that increases each year (and by how much)

It’s a bit like buying a new car from a showroom. The more extras you want (e.g. sporty wheels, cabriolet, expensive sound system) the more you pay. With an annuity, you start with a fund and ‘pay’ for each of the extras. The ‘payment’ for each, effectively comes off your top line fund so the lower the final fund after you bought extras, the less you have to buy that final pension. As with anything financial it’s a little more complicated than that but I hope this gives you a simplified idea.

Drawdown has its own nuances too…

Today’s RR forum conversation is exactly why I joined this group. Full of insightful viewpoints, which may be personal opinions, but I find them invaluable and well worth reading. Thanks to those who’ve took time to post today. I for one really appreciate this type of dialogue. Forty plus years in the financial sector and still learning.

Personally, I’d completely discount any relevance to that article given, as others have already said, the grammar construct is worse than an 8 year old. The article also refers to Prime Minister Rachel Reeves…need we say more.

Depending upon which report you reference, data centres currently account for 1%-3% of the energy supply worldwide. The exponential demand for data storage and AI applications over the next few years means a significant call on energy supplies. Common sense would be to suggest this would be good news for SMR suppliers.

On my daily visits to this forum I never fail to be surprised, educated, sometimes wince or cringe, delighted, disappointment (shared) etc. It’s a real microcosm of viewpoints. BUT, I didn’t think I’d be signposted to a Kenny Roger’s video which I have to say I really enjoyed (the trip down memory lane) and I could see the relevance/link to regular conversation. Made my day!

According to HL website for RR as of 7.00am 10.04.2025:

Since the commencement of the Programme, the Company has repurchased 26,566,186 Ordinary Shares in aggregate at a weighted average price of 746.6031 pence per Ordinary Share.

So by my maths that’s approximately £198m spent so far of the £1bn.

More positive outlook from JP Morgan today:

In a broader note on the sector, JPM said that as the sun sets on summer and it looks ahead into the final quarter, it sees a buying opportunity into winter for the European airlines sector.

"The sector has started to inflect upwards over the past month, however, remains a large underperformer versus the market this year, due to concerns over softer passenger demand as pricing has begun to normalise for the first time post pandemic," it said.

The bank said sector risk-reward now looks positive, which could lead to continued seasonal outperformance in Q4.

"Lower fuel and normalising (rather than collapsing) pricing means we currently see a high likelihood of margin expansion into next year versus depressed (peak cycle) multiples," it said.
