RE: The USA To Block The Strait of Hormuz12 Apr 2026 17:00
This is what AI thinks of Iran's bluff to sink oil tankers going through the Strait of Hormuz..it would be economic suicide for Iran..So tankers should just start going through..
1. The Environmental "Auto-Destruct"
The Persian Gulf is a semi-enclosed body of water with a very slow flush rate; it takes nearly three to five years for the water to fully exchange with the Indian Ocean.
Desalination Dependency: Iran, like its neighbors, is increasingly dependent on desalination for fresh water. A massive "heavy crude" spill would clog intake valves and contaminate the water supply for millions of Iranian citizens.
The "Black Rain" Effect: We’ve already seen reports this year of "black rain" over Tehran following strikes on oil depots. A massive spill in the Strait would cause localized toxic evaporation, potentially leading to environmental collapse along Iran’s southern coast.
2. Economic Suicide
Even if Iran were willing to sacrifice its environment, the economic logic is thin:
Sole Export Route: Unlike Saudi Arabia or the UAE, which have pipelines to the Red Sea or the Gulf of Oman, the vast majority of Iran’s remaining oil exports (largely to China) must pass through the Strait. Sinking ships would effectively blockade their own primary source of revenue.
Infrastructure Damage: The heavy crude would coat Iranian port infrastructure, making it nearly impossible to maintain or operate their own docks without multi-billion dollar cleanup efforts that the current sanctioned economy cannot afford.
3. The "China Factor"
This is the biggest check on Iranian action. China is the primary buyer of the oil that moves through the Strait.
Strategic Divergence: Recent reports indicate that Beijing has been pressuring Tehran to keep the waterway open. Sinking tankers doesn't just hurt "the West"; it creates an energy and fertilizer crisis in Asia, potentially turning Iran’s only major superpower ally against them.
