The current account balance has been running at minus 4% to 6% of GDP since 2011.This consumption mainly on credit is sucking in imports yet we have a powerless independent Bank of England unable to react because it's on target with its mandate to maintain inflation at 2% +/- 1%.
Nothing much likely to change unless Carney can miracle up an excuse to raise rates.

North Sea oil has kept us afloat from 1980,most of it was pumped out the ground during the1990's at a price of less than $40,we became a net exporter with highs of 60% of production but from 2005/6 we changed to a net importer and by 2018 we import 38% at a cost of $66.9bn.
Whether we brexit or not if oil stays at these prices and our consumption remains at current levels then the economy returns to pre North Sea days,devaluation hasn't created more manufacturing and will only exacerbate the import cost of the oil.

The policy is,America first not the people.They will pay for the tariffs with whatever tax refunds they've had.
25% tariff on many products will still not be sufficent for American manufacturing to compete with China and shows how out of kilter manufacturing has become.
It does make you ponder where America or even the UK can find additional labour for manufacturing jobs when the economy is embedded in a labour intensive service economy with exsisting high levels of employment or are they going to import more Mexicans!.
America first is all about maintaining a high oil price,destabilising if necessary a few other oil producers and as a consequence net oil importers like the UK up a creek without a paddle.......i wonder who we'll blame?

They got away with it.The Conservatives have cut funding to local authorities destroying local services such as buses,roads etc and allowed council tax to rise above inflation thus saving them billions.

Love_You,i don't think anyone is knocking the UK oil industry.
UK oil had a good 2018,oil/gas import dependency was only 38% but it cost us $66.9bn or £5bn a month(5 times EU club).It's a matter of getting our priorities right for the future,otherwise the UK will be reverting back to the 1970's with a manufacturing base of only 11%,down from 25% of GDP and unable to pay for the black stuff.
So invest in alternative energy's which are made in Britain.

Boomer,and you cannot spot the link between US oil fracking requiring a price in excess of $60 and US foreign policy towards oil exporting countries,the last thing US wants is peace in any of these countries.
You can add Iraq to that list as well but of course that was all about weapons of mass destruction and nothing to do with oil.

Not surprising US growth up,the US is now the number one producer of crude oil and prices are on the way up due to US inspired instability in Libya,Venezuala,Iran and if they could Russia.Russia supplies a third of Europe's oil so i'm not sure they could get away with that one.
The high price of oil sucks the life blood out of Europe with 90% dependency on imports and the UK is now also a net importer at $66.9bn.Putting CO2 aside wouldn't it be best to avoid a cliff edge and use alternatives?

The UK government oversee's the lowest state pension in the OECD.For many this means they require pension credits which are similar to in-work credits which you all seem to demonise.For many pensioners too proud to take the credit it means poverty,if the Conservatives were that caring they would create the living pension in line with the living wage.
People just want honest and fair government,if we had one there wouldn't be any requirement for Labour opposition or any opposition.

Hooky,yeap they forecast peak oil in the 1980's but they just found more expensive oil and with no alternatives we just paid more and offset the cost by using more efficiently. $70 is a nice price,there's not much appeal for change and oil companies can still profit.The same couldn't be said above $100 we have too many alternatives this time.

The EU and single market is highly likely to collapse as much as Lloyds or the UK,it's all a matter of time but as i've stated before the UK as we currently know it is more likely to break-up before the EU if we have a "no deal" brexit.
Does it stop me from investing in UK companies-no,as much as does it stop me from investing in the oil companies even though we know we are running out of oil within the next 25yrs.
Wouldn't rely on fusion energy ever being cheap this century,the engineering required to control a hydrogen bomb would be prohibitive.

Boomer,i think your confusing biofuel with biomass for electricity generation,easily done.Biomass burns the methane from sewage,farm slurry or food waste.Energy from waste plants stops the waste going to landfill sites which are ventilated for years to allow the methane to escape.
Was it you that highlighted methane is worse than CO2?
Not quite so sure about importing trees to burn,however in relation to natural fires within forested countries,Portugal,Spain,Canada,U.S etc,etc,the man-made burn at Drax is insignificant.

Germany's peak demand for electricity is around 75GW this time of year (they still make things) while ours is around 35GW.What is interesting If you look at attached graph the renewables did peak this week at 65GW twice our demand with solar at 27GW.Germany is well interconnected with the rest of Europe so can draw or offer surpluses easily.It's not perfect without storage but it works.
Biomass at 5GW impressive and constant.
