Nor-Shipping 2025, our Head of Marine, Linda Johnstone Sorensen, Ph.D.., joined other maritime industry experts in discussions centred around the urgency and complexity of maritime decarbonisation.
Upon returning, Linda reflected on key considerations that are influencing decision makers within the industry:
“With the IMO’s Net Zero Framework and upcoming MEPC resolution expected to bring emissions penalties from 2028, shipowners are facing pressing decisions.
While regulatory direction is improving, key challenges remain:
🔹Infrastructure for alternative fuels is underdeveloped, making it difficult for shipowners to commit to long-term fuel pathways.
🔹Shipyard capacity is constrained for both newbuilds and retrofits, a pressure point that will intensify as 2030 approaches.
🔹Many shipowners are seeking stronger collaboration across the value chain: from charterers and cargo interests to financiers and fuel providers.
🔹There is growing concern around supply constraints and rising costs for compliant fuels.
In this landscape, flexibility is critical and biofuels are well-positioned to support the transition. They can be used across existing fleets with minimal modification, and do not depend on speculative infrastructure.
However, not all biofuels are created equal. Variability in feedstock quality has already led to operational issues in the industry. The challenge lies not just in adopting biofuels, but in securing a high-quality, reliable supply.
This is where Quadrise’s proprietary bioMSAR® technology offers a low-carbon, engine-tested solution that supports regulatory compliance while preserving operational flexibility. It provides shipowners with a practical pathway to act now, without compromising future readiness.”
