Ecuador and the United States sign agreement for the supply of critical minerals and rare earth elements

Ecuador and the United States signed a cooperation agreement to ensure the supply and processing of critical minerals and rare earth elements , in the context of the Ministerial Conference on Critical Minerals held in Washington, as reported on February 4 by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry, Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld participated in the forum convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio , which brought together authorities from 54 countries to address security of supply and resilience of value chains.
During the meeting, Ecuador and the United States signed the 'Framework for Supply Assurance in Mining and Processing of Critical Minerals and Rare Earths' which seeks to "strengthen and diversify supply chains through cooperation."
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that critical minerals are essential for strategic industries of the 21st century and for advancing the energy transition, digitalization, and artificial intelligence.
In addition, Ecuador valued the inclusion of "transparency measures and the implementation of traceability and information exchange systems" to combat illegal mining, considered by the Government as a national security priority.
