It is worth noting that the "total lifetime" cost of a mortgage versus renting is marginal, and long has been.
Renters don't have to pay £10,000 in moving fees, £3,000 for a new boiler, £100,000 in interest fees to the bank, and so on.
What's more, the world's richest "proper" economy (Switzerland) is a rental economy (60%), not a mortgage economy.
And linguists will note that mortgage is derived from the French for "dead money".
In short -- renting is not as bad as you think, and can often be cheaper over a lifetime. Just ask the Swiss.
