RE: UK inflation dropped to 8.7% in the 12 months to April24 May 2023 13:04
..."Problem with food inflation is, UK farmers have been hammered for years on prices from the big supermarkets all wanting cheap food, driving down margins to unsustainable levels"...
Wish people would stop spreading this myth.
UK farmers get hammered on food / ingredient / drink prices because of *low barriers to entry and massive oversupply*.
It is simple economics.
The UK is ~70% farmland. Anyone can buy a field, sprinkle seeds on it, sunbathe for 4 months, then sell it down the market. Anyone can build a shed, fill it with moo cows, tug their udders, then sell it down the market. If you don't want to sell me 1 litre of milk for 45p, there are another 50 farmers round the corner (or abroad) who will.
Farming is one of the easiest industries to get into. You don't need GCSEs or a degree or years of training. Despite what you see on Clarkson's Farm, you mostly just need a driving licence and a pair of wellies.
Supermarkets are not to blame for low farm prices. Global and UK farm oversupply is the core reason.
