Mineral resources
The term "mineral resources" in the context of electricity generation primarily refers to geologically occurring materials extracted from the Earth that are used as fuel or as critical components in power generation technologies.
1. Fossil Fuels (Combustible Minerals)
Coal : The most significant mineral resource for electricity historically. Burned in power plants to heat water, create steam, and drive turbines.
Natural Gas: While technically a hydrocarbon gas mixture, it's extracted as a mineral resource (often alongside petroleum). Burned in gas turbines (combustion turbines) or steam boilers to generate electricity. Very efficient and currently a major global source.
Petroleum (Oil):** Less common for grid electricity today due to cost and emissions, but still used in some regions or for backup generators. Burned to create steam or directly in combustion turbines.
