From Alex Robinson ex SEE aviation expert ;
Congratulations to Emirates and Seeing Machines on the publication of 'Eye-Tracking: From Concept to Operational Training Tool' in the Journal of Aviation Psychology and Applied Human Factors (Hogrefe Ltd)!
One of the most interesting things about this body of work was its time span over six years, in conducting a proof of concept in an A330 Airbus Procedure Trainer, followed by a focused study in an A380 Full Flight Simulator, and most recently with consideration of how to optimally design an instructor interface for utility, value, and interpretation.
This extended period granted the time and evolution to illustrate that eye-tracking based information is inherently valuable from a training and learning perspective, but as important is the format in which it is conveyed to and used by instructors and pilots. In other words, the problem-solution fit of utilising eye-tracking to help "close the evidence-based training loop and enhance standards of pilot training" is sound, and industry should now shift towards optimising "data management, equipment integration, instructor training, and adaptations to workflow" to deliver these benefits.
It was a privilege to work with co-authors Dr. Patrizia Knabl-Schmitz, Mark Cameron, Kyle Wilson, PhD, Megan Mulhall, Jeremy Da Cruz, and Nicklas Dahlstrom on this effort - shukran and thank you.
While the article is paywalled, please reach out and I would be happy to share.
